Peter Sohn

Peter Sohn (born October 18, 1977) is an American filmmaker, animator, storyboard artist, and voice actor best known for his long‑standing collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios. Raised in the Bronx, New York City, he is the son of Korean immigrants Yung Tahk Sohn and Hea Ja Sohn and grew up alongside a younger brother, experiences that later informed the urban sensibility of his 2023 feature Elemental. After graduating from the California Institute of the Arts, where he met his future wife, artist Anna Chambers, Sohn landed a summer position on Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant (1999) and subsequently worked for Disney and Warner Bros. before joining Pixar’s art and story departments for Finding Nemo (2003). At Pixar he contributed to the visual development of The Incredibles (2004), voiced Emile in the Oscar‑winning Ratatouille (2007), and helped shape the narrative of WALL‑E (2008). His directorial debut came with the whimsical short Partly Cloudy (2009), which he also wrote and which earned a spot in the Animation Show of Shows the same year. Sohn co‑directed the English adaptation of Miyazaki’s Ponyo (2009) and provided the voice of Russell in the Up short George & A.J. (2009). He went on to direct the feature The Good Dinosaur (2015), a technically ambitious but commercially challenged film in which he voiced the Styracosaurus Forrest Woodbush. The 2023 release Elemental, inspired by his New York upbringing, marked his second Pixar feature and garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature, eventually becoming a sleeper hit. In addition to his directing work, Sohn has supplied memorable side‑character voices such as Squishy in Monsters University (2013), Ciccio in Luca (2021), and Sox in Lightyear (2022). Looking ahead, Pixar announced in June 2025 that Sohn will helm Incredibles 3, a testament to his growing influence within the studio.
