What's After the Movie
Peter Wyngarde was a British actor whose flamboyant style and enigmatic personal myth made him one of the most recognizable television personalities of the early 1970s. Born Cyril Goldbert on 23 August 1927—officially recorded in Singapore, though he often claimed Marseille as his birthplace—he arrived in the United Kingdom as an eighteen‑year‑old refugee from the Lunghua internment camp after World War II. Within months he adopted the stage name Peter Wyngarde and began a prolific stage career, appearing at the Buxton Playhouse in 1946 and quickly moving to West End productions such as Noël Coward’s Present Laughter and a celebrated turn as Cyrano de Bergerac at the Bristol Old Vic in 1959. His film work included roles in Alexander the Great (1956) and the cult horror The Innocents (1961), but it was television that brought him lasting fame. As the charismatic novelist‑turned‑detective Jason King in Department S (1969‑70) and the spin‑off series Jason King (1971‑72), Wyngarde epitomised the suave, sartorially daring hero, famous for his droopy moustache, bright three‑piece suits and a swagger that inspired later pop‑culture icons such as Austin Powers.
Beyond his on‑screen exploits, Wyngarde’s life was marked by contradictions and controversy. He married actress Dorinda Stevens in 1951, a union that dissolved after three turbulent years, and later faced legal difficulties, including a 1975 conviction for gross indecency that tarnished his public image. Financial hardships led to multiple bankruptcies in the 1980s, yet he continued to appear in projects ranging from Flash Gordon (1980) to a guest role in Doctor Who (1984). In his later years he withdrew from regular acting, living quietly on Earls Terrace in London, where he remained a beloved figure among devoted fans and was remembered as Britain’s best‑dressed male personality of 1970. He died on 15 January 2018 in Chelsea, leaving a legacy of style, mystery, and a cult following that endures.
