Robert Finster

Robert Finster is an Austrian actor whose career has been marked by a blend of classical theatre training and contemporary screen success. Born on 10 March 1984 in Bruck an der Mur, he grew up in a musical family in Graz, where early exposure to violin and choral singing cultivated his artistic sensibilities. After an unsuccessful audition for acting studies in Graz, he persevered and enrolled at the prestigious Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna in 2007, graduating in 2011. His stage debut came at the Reichenau Festival with Fräulein Else in 2011, followed by a series of demanding roles at the Vorarlberg State Theatre, including Tartuffe, Mutter Courage, and Ronja Räubertochter. Finster’s versatility shone through in experimental productions such as Cafe deja vu and Neil LaBute’s Das Maß der Dinge, and he expanded his repertoire with performances at the Bosnian National Theatre and Vienna's Lustspielhaus, notably as Hamlet under director Adi Hirschal.

Transitioning to screen, Finster appeared in numerous Austrian TV series and films, but his breakthrough arrived in 2020 when Netflix cast him as Sigmund Freud in the eponymous series, a role that garnered both critical praise and international visibility. He continued to build his screen profile with the role of Crimson Commander David Vossin in Netflix’s sci‑fi series Tribes of Europa (2021) and a variety of supporting parts in crime dramas and short films. Since the 2019/20 season he has been an ensemble member at the Schauspielhaus Graz, maintaining a strong foothold in both theatre and film while contributing to Austria’s vibrant contemporary performing arts scene.
