What's After the Movie

Solveig Dommartin

Solveig Dommartin (16 May 1961 – 11 January 2007) was a notable French actress. Her acting journey began in theatre where she became a part of Compagnie Timothee Laine and the Theater Labor Warschau. Beyond theatre, she ventured into the film industry, beginning as an assistant to Jacques Rozier before making her debut in the film Wings of Desire (1987), directed by Wim Wenders, with whom she had a personal relationship. Impressively, Dommartin learned circus acrobatics within eight weeks for her role in Wings of Desire, performing without a stunt double. She co-authored and played an instrumental role in creating Until the End of the World (1991) with Wenders and travelled around the world alongside him searching for ideal locations for the film. Wim Wenders himself, commended their work synergy and expressed that they felt a sense of entitlement towards the sacred aspects of their work because they were willing to invest their personal interests in it. Tragically, Dommartin died at the young age of 45 due to a heart attack in Paris, 2007.
