Tully Marshall, born as William Phillips, was an American character actor who made important contributions to the entertainment industry through his extensive theatrical and film career. Born on April 10, 1864, in Nevada City, California, Marshall graduated from Santa Clara College with an engineering degree before commencing his acting career. He ventured into acting at the young age of 18, his Broadway debut was in 'The Clever Ones' in 1914. Marshall's theatrical career spanned almost a quarter of a century, during which he also managed stock theater troupes, notably E. H. Sothern's company. In 1914 he ventured into the Hollywood domain, his screen debut was in 'Paid in Full' (1914). He had a rich stint in silent films, and his career thrived with the advent of the sound era, featuring in a wide array of roles. His portrayal of John Wayne's sidekick in 'The Big Trail' (1930) and a sinister nitrogen industrialist in 'This Gun for Hire' (1942) are worth mentioning. Marshall's acting career spanned six decades until his death on March 10, 1943. He was married to Marion Fairfax, a screenwriter, playwright, actress and head of her own studio, from 1899 until his death.
