Wagner Moura is a Brazilian actor, director, and filmmaker born on 27 June 1976. Starting his career in theater, Moura transitioned to films and got his first leading role in 2003. His breakout role was in Carandiru, bringing him to the forefront of Brazilian cinema. His best-known roles are the ones he played in box office hits Elite Squad and Elite Squad 2, where he brought to life the character Captain Nascimento. With these films, both of which reverberated outside of Brazil, Moura received international recognition. In 2007, his performance as the antagonist in the telenovela Paraíso Tropical was praised widely. His career saw a rise when he worked in the American sci-fi movie Elysium in 2013 and later in 2015, he started in the series Narcos, playing drug trafficker Pablo Escobar. His remarkable performance got him multiple award nominations, including the Golden Globe. He also directed two episodes of Narcos: Mexico. In 2021, Moura debuted as a movie director with Marighella, a successful biopic that won several awards.
