Wally Brown

Wallace Edgar Brown (October 8, 1904 – November 13, 1961) was an American actor and comedian who rose to prominence in the 1940s as half of the comic duo Brown & Carney. Born in Malden, Massachusetts, he was the son of Herbert, a newspaper compositor, and Lillian (Garnier) Brown, and after an early departure from Malden High School he completed his education at the Malden Commercial Business School and attended courses at Chicago University. Before entering show business he held a variety of jobs—from serving soda at a drug‑store fountain and working as a second chef at a Maine hotel to grinding type as a printer’s devil in Boston—experiences that later informed his every‑man comedic persona. He debuted professionally with the Jimmy Evans Song Box Revue in Beacon Falls, Pennsylvania, and spent fifteen years honing his craft in vaudeville, eventually catching the eye of RKO Radio Pictures, where he made his film debut in Petticoat Larceny (1942). RKO paired him with Alan Carney to emulate Abbott and Costello, launching a successful run of eight films that included the military farce Adventures of a Rookie (1943), its sequel Rookies in Burma, and the horror‑comedy Zombies on Broadway (1945) starring Bela Lugosi. After the duo’s contract ended in 1946, Brown pursued solo work, appearing in Columbia shorts with Tim Ryan and Jack Kirkwood, and later transitioning to television where he portrayed memorable characters such as Jed Fame on Cimarron City and Chauncey Kowalski on The Roaring 20’s. His radio credits include regular spots on The Abbott and Costello Show, and he made guest appearances on series like Perry Mason and My Three Sons up until his final role in The Absent‑Minded Professor (1961). Brown’s personal life was anchored by his marriage to dancer Mildred Lane, with whom he had a son and a daughter, and he died of a throat hemorrhage at age 57 in Los Angeles, leaving a legacy of versatile comic talent that still charms classic‑film enthusiasts.
