What's After the Movie
Gary Fleder (/ˈfleɪdər/; born December 19, 1965) is an accomplished American film director, screenwriter, and producer. He gained recognition in the film industry with his recent film, Homefront, released by Open Road Films and Millennium Films in November 2013. Throughout his career, Fleder has shown his versatility and prolific nature by directing various television pilots and episodes. Born to a Jewish family in Norfolk, Virginia, Fleder is the son of Lorraine and Harry Fleder. A graduate of Boston University and the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Fleder broke into the television industry in 1993 with an award-winning episode of Tales from the Crypt. He has directed numerous television series, such as L.A. Doctors, Blind Justice, among others and was an executive producer and frequent director of October Road, Life Unexpected, and The Art of More.
Notably, Fleder directed 'Subway', a 1996 episode of Homicide: Life on the Street that earned a Peabody Award for its guest star, Vincent D'Onofrio. This successful director contributed to the Emmy Award-winning mini-series From the Earth to the Moon, in collaboration with producer, Tom Hanks. Fleder's feature film debut, Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead, premiered at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival and remains a cult favorite. He has successfully directed several thrillers such as Kiss the Girls (1997), Don't Say a Word (2001), Impostor (2002) and Runaway Jury (2003). His film The Express, released in October 2008 tells the story of Ernie Davis, the first African-American winner of the Heisman Trophy. Apart from directing, Fleder also shares his knowledge and experience as an adjunct faculty at USC School of Cinema and Television.
