What's After the Movie

Gurinder Chadha

**Gurinder Kaur Chadha**, OBE, born on 10 January 1960, is a dynamic Kenyan-born British film director of Indian origin. Most of her noteworthy films brilliantly immerse into the lives of Indians residing in England, shedding light on the harmonization of traditional and modern cultures they experience. The Indian ladies in the United Kingdom and their trials form one of the central themes of her work. The majority of her films resonate the social and emotional challenges immigrants often have to face, caught between two contrasting worlds. She is highly acclaimed for her films like Bhaji on the Beach (1993), Bend It Like Beckham (2002), Bride and Prejudice (2004), Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging (2008), It's a Wonderful Afterlife (2010) and Viceroy's House (2017). Chadha takes pride in not only producing book-to-film adaptations but also imbuing them with a distinct panache. Chadha's latest creations include the biographical musical comedy-drama Blinded by the Light (2019) and the television sensation Beecham House. Many of her future offerings would be inspired by her profound experience of striking an equilibrium between her British and Indian traditions.
