Mikael Håfström

Mikael Håfström, born Jan Mikael Håfström in Lund, Sweden on 12 June 1960, is a Swedish film director and screenwriter best known for his work in both Scandinavian and Hollywood horror and action genres. His early education in film took place at Stockholm University where he studied cinematography and at the School of Visual Arts, giving him a solid grounding in both European and American filmmaking techniques. Håfström made his directorial debut in the late 1980s and quickly established a reputation for crafting tense atmospheres, a skill that culminated in his 2003 feature Evil (original title Ondska), which earned a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 76th Oscars, marking the first time a Swedish horror film received such recognition. Following the success of Evil, he ventured into international markets with the 2004 slasher Drowning Ghost, which was screened at the Cannes Film Market, and soon after directed Derailed (2005), a thriller starring Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston that showcased his ability to handle mainstream American productions. In 2007 he tackled Stephen King's short story 1408, delivering a psychological horror vehicle for John Cusack that highlighted Håfström's talent for blending supernatural dread with character‑driven narratives. He continued this collaboration by directing the 2010 drama Shanghai, which premiered at the Shanghai International Film Festival, further cementing his global reach. His 2011 exorcism thriller The Rite, starring Anthony Hopkins, demonstrated his flair for religious horror, while the 2013 action‑thriller Escape Plan paired Arnold Schwarzenegger with Sylvester Stallone, proving his versatility across genre boundaries.
