Pedro Costa (born 30 December 1958 in Lisbon, Portugal) is a renowned Portuguese film director and screenwriter whose oeuvre is defined by a steadfast commitment to portraying the marginalised inhabitants of Lisbon’s Fontainhas neighbourhood. After earning a degree in history from the University of Lisbon, Costa honed his craft as an assistant to notable Portuguese filmmakers such as Jorge Silva Melo, Vítor Gonçalves and João Botelho, before releasing his debut feature O Sangue at the age of thirty, marking the beginning of a prolific career that has spanned over three decades. His early works, especially Ossos (1997) and In Vanda's Room (2000), attracted international critical attention and secured prestigious honors such as the France Culture Award at Cannes in 2002. Costa’s distinctive style blends docufiction with ascetic digital video aesthetics, often employing non‑actors who play versions of themselves, a technique that has been praised for its "Rembrandt‑like" lighting and neo‑realist sensitivity. The director’s affiliation with the “School of Reis” and mentorship under António Reis at the Lisbon Theatre and Film School informed his lyrical approach, while his admiration for Straub–Huillet is evident in the contemplative documentary Where Does Your Hidden Smile Lie?
