Pieter Kuijpers

Pieter Kuijpers (born 30 July 1968 in Tegelen, Netherlands) is a prolific Dutch film director, producer and screenwriter whose career has spanned more than two and a half decades. Emerging from a modest background in the southern Limburg town of Tegelen, Kuijpers studied the craft of storytelling before breaking into the industry with his debut feature Darkling in 1995, a gritty drama that announced his willingness to explore morally complex characters. Over the next years he built a reputation for handling both cinematic and television projects with equal vigor, directing the hard‑edged crime thriller Van God Los (Godforsaken) in 2003, a film that earned him the coveted Golden Calf for Best Film and Best Screenplay at the Nederlands Film Festival. His versatility is evident in the stark contrast between the dark humor of De Griezelbus (Gruesome School Trip) the same year and the introspective Manslaughter (Doodslag) in 2012, which garnered an international nomination for the Magnolia Award at the Shanghai International TV Festival. Kuijpers’s later work, such as the historical drama Riphagen (2016) and the ambitious series Ares (2020), demonstrates his continued commitment to blending commercial appeal with substantive narrative depth, a balance that has kept him relevant in the evolving Dutch media landscape. In 2016 he received the ShortCutz Amsterdam Career Achievement Award, recognizing his sustained contributions to Dutch cinema and television.
