Shekhar Kulbhushan Kapur (born 6 December 1945) is a renowned Indian filmmaker and part of the Anand-Sahni family. His illustrious career includes numerous accolades such as a BAFTA Award, a National Film Award, a National Board of Review Award, and three Filmfare Awards, alongside a Golden Globe Award nomination. Kapur first gained recognition in Bollywood with his role in the TV series Khandaan. He made his directorial debut with the cult classic Masoom in 1983, which earned him widespread acclaim. This was quickly followed by the success of Mr. India in 1987. He achieved further notoriety with the 1994 biographical film Bandit Queen, based on infamous Indian bandit and politician Phoolan Devi. The film premiered in the directors fortnight section of the 1994 Cannes Film Festival.
In addition to his Bollywood career, Kapur has also had a significant impact on international cinema. His 1998 period film Elizabeth, a fictional account of the reign of British Queen Elizabeth I, was nominated for seven Academy Awards. He followed up with the sequel Elizabeth: The Golden Age in 2007. Beyond directing, Kapur has also been active as an actor, appearing in various Hindi television dramas and movies. He was a judge on the reality TV series India's Got Talent, and even lent his voice to the Charkha Audiobooks title of The Story of My Experiments with Truth, portraying Mohandas Gandhi. He has also ventured into comic book publishing, forming Liquid Comics and Virgin Animation in 2006, with a focus on creating new stories and characters for a global audience.
