Thomas A. DiCillo, known as Tom DiCillo, is a highly regarded American film director, screenwriter, cinematographer, and musician. Born on August 14th, 1953 in Camp Le Jeune, North Carolina, DiCillo embarked on his artistic journey by studying creative writing at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. He further developed his filmmaking skills at the prestigious New York University's Film School, nurturing his talent alongside the likes of Jim Jarmusch, Howard Brookner, Sara Driver, and Spike Lee. DiCillo wasted no time in utilizing his refined skills, working as an actor and cinematographer before migrating to the role of a director.
DiCillo's directorial debut arrived in 1991 with Johnny Suede, earning both himself and starring actors Brad Pitt and Catherine Keener their first major roles. He followed up Johnny Suede in 1995 with the critically acclaimed Living in Oblivion, a biting satire of independent filmmaking. Other notable films directed by DiCillo include Double Whammy (2001) and Delirious (2006), the latter winning several awards at the San Sebastian Film Festival. Embarking into the realm of documentary, DiCillo explored the story of the iconic band The Doors with When You're Strange (2009), a film that went on to earn an Emmy nomination.
