Trey Edward Shults, born October 6, 1988, is a renowned American film director, producer, writer, and actor. Shults has made a significant impact in the film industry, particularly recognized for his directional and writing prowess showcased in Krisha (2015), the psychological horror film It Comes at Night (2017), and the drama Waves (2019). His cinematographic journey kick-started in 2010 with the short film Mother and Son, which he also wrote, edited, and produced. He further honed his skills by working on three films of Terrence Malick — Song to Song, Voyage of Time, and The Tree of Life — as a film loader, post-production intern, and intern. Shults, initially a business management student, dropped out to fully immerse himself in the world of films, even directing and producing another short film starring Fairchild, titled Two to One. In 2014, he continued to show his versatility by not only writing, producing, and directing the short film Krisha, but also making an appearance in it. He repeated the same roles in a feature-length adaptation of the same name, which earned him the Grand Jury Award at South by Southwest in March 2015. Krisha was based on a real-life incident involving Shults's cousin's relapse at a family reunion and saw its release in 2016 after being acquired by A24. With A24, Shults released another film, a 2017 psychological horror movie It Comes at Night, starring Joel Edgerton. His most recent contribution to the screen is the highly praised drama Waves, released November 15, 2019.
