Plot Summary

As astronaut Lucy Cola (played by) emerges from her initial cosmic excursion, she’s left grappling with a profound sense of disconnection from her mundane life back on Earth. Despite being required to undergo NASA’s therapeutic regimen and strongly advised to take it easy, Lucy instead chooses to push herself physically and mentally in an attempt to expedite her return to the vast expanse. During this period of intense training, she crosses paths with a younger female astronaut named Erin (played by), whose presence only serves to further stir up Lucy’s sense of restlessness.

Feeling stifled by her supportive husband’s constant encouragement, Lucy finds herself seeking solace among a community of astronauts who have experienced the thrill of space travel. It’s here that she begins an illicit affair with Mark (played by), another veteran astronaut who shares her passion for the cosmos. As their relationship deepens, Lucy becomes increasingly disenchanted with her husband and the monotony of her daily life.

Lucy’s determination to outdo Erin, who recently set a record for space travel, drives her to push herself to the limit during an underwater training exercise. Miraculously, she nearly drowns yet remains eerily calm, her heart rate actually slowing down in response to the crisis. However, this apparent feat of mental toughness is tempered by the revelation that Mark is simultaneously carrying on an affair with Erin, leaving Lucy feeling isolated and disillusioned.

As her personal life begins to unravel, Lucy’s beloved grandmother passes away suddenly, a devastating event that sends her into a tailspin of grief and despair. Her husband’s growing concern about her erratic behavior only serves to further exacerbate the situation, ultimately leading to a dramatic confrontation at a bowling alley where she breaks down in tears.

Meanwhile, NASA administration is forced to confront Lucy with her recent near-drowning incident as well as her failure to comply with therapy sessions. The final blow comes when they inform her that she’s been passed over for the upcoming mission, sparking a fierce sense of paranoia and resentment within Lucy. In an act of desperation, she hacks into Mark’s computer and discovers incriminating emails revealing his continued affair with Erin, as well as evidence that he’d been secretly lobbying NASA to disqualify Lucy from future missions.

The discovery only serves to fuel her paranoia further, leading her to uncover the shocking truth that Erin has been selected for the mission. As the reality of her situation begins to sink in, Lucy is left feeling utterly defeated and disillusioned with the universe around her.

As the fragile threads of sanity continue to fray, Lucy unleashes a maelstrom of retribution upon Mark and Erin. With her niece by her side, she embarks on a perilous odyssey across the country, surrendering to the whims of her fractured psyche. Hallucinations of her grandmother swirl around her like ethereal apparitions, leaving in their wake emotionally charged voicemails for NASA that are as erratic as they are disturbing.

Disguised behind a veil of deception, Lucy stalks Mark and Erin at an airport, her wig a mere facade concealing the turmoil brewing beneath. As she tracks Mark to his vehicle, her emotions reach a boiling point, culminating in a tearful confrontation that is abruptly interrupted by Erin’s timely arrival. In a bizarre display of fury, Lucy unleashes a barrage of insect spray upon Mark, prompting him to speed away in a panic. As the chaos unfolds, Lucy’s grip on reality finally snaps, and she is taken into custody by authorities after attempting to flee.

Three years later, the once-turbulent storm has largely subsided, leaving behind a landscape of quiet contemplation. As her niece stands before her classmates, delivering a thoughtful presentation with Lucy’s husband in attendance, the former wrongdoer has traded in her tumultuous existence for a more peaceful life as a beekeeper. With a sense of gentle contentment, Lucy closes the lid on one of her hives, then lifts the hood of her protective suit, permitting herself a fleeting moment of serenity amidst the gentle hum of her bees and the delicate dance of a solitary butterfly that flits about her.
