Set in medieval England, this film unfolds with a young thief, Marian, played by Eve Hewson, who sneaks into a stable to steal a horse. Her actions are swiftly interrupted as Robin of Loxley, portrayed by Taron Egerton, catches her in the act. Rather than turning her in, Robin is captivated by her charm and allows her to ride off. Their relationship blossoms until Robin is abruptly summoned by the Sheriff of Nottingham, played by Ben Mendelsohn, for the Crusades, forcing him to leave Marian behind.

Fast forward four years, and Robin finds himself engaged in a brutal conflict against the Moors while attempting to rescue a fellow soldier. During this skirmish, he crosses paths with Yahya, a Moor warrior portrayed by Jamie Foxx, who nearly ends his life. Just when things seem dire, Guy of Gisbourne, played by Paul Anderson, intervenes, severing Yahya’s hand. Yahya later finds himself imprisoned alongside his son, desperately bargaining for their freedom, but the Sheriff orders his son’s execution. Witnessing this tragedy, Robin is struck by an arrow from Gisborne and sent back to England on a medical ship.

Upon returning, Robin discovers that his home has fallen into disrepair and that the Sheriff had falsely declared him dead two years prior. Friar Tuck, portrayed by Tim Minchin, reveals this shocking news as well as the fact that Marian has held a memorial for him. Adding to the dire situation, the Sheriff is extorting taxes from the townspeople under the pretense of funding the war, ultimately driving them to despair.

Determined to find Marian, Robin is devastated to witness her distributing supplies and seems to have moved on with Will Tillman, played by Jamie Dornan. In an unexpected twist, Yahya encounters Robin again, not to exact revenge but to express gratitude for Robin’s earlier intervention. He offers to train Robin to fight back against the Sheriff, asking to be referred to as “John.”

During a public meeting, the Sheriff tries to manipulate the townsfolk into supporting his war taxes. As Marian and Will voice concerns about the starvation plaguing the community, Friar Tuck causes a stir by announcing Robin’s survival, much to Marian’s shock. Soon after, John takes Robin to refine his archery skills, where, despite a rocky start, he soon becomes exceptionally proficient.

After a hesitant reunion with Marian, she and Robin’s long-lost connection reignites at a gathering where the Sheriff attempts to entertain the Cardinal ( /actor/f-murray-abraham), played by F. Murray Abraham. With Friar Tuck helping them infiltrate the Sheriff’s ranks, Robin uses the gathering as a cover for his true intentions. The Sheriff’s oppressive actions escalate as he sends his men to wreak havoc on the town, leading to a confrontation where John is captured and tortured for information.

In a bid to unify the townsfolk, Will rallies them to oppose the Sheriff. Seizing the moment, Robin reveals his identity as “The Hood,” igniting hope among the citizens to reclaim their home. With Tuck’s assistance, they set a trap for the Sheriff’s wagon, successfully redistributing wealth among the townspeople while freeing John from captivity.

As chaos ensues between the rebels and the sheriff’s soldiers, Robin encounters Gisborne in battle. He hesitates to kill him, sparing him out of respect for shared experiences during the war. Though Robin and Marian share a heartfelt reunion, it triggers jealousy in Will, leading to his confrontation with Marian. In the ensuing turmoil, Robin steps forward to prevent harm to the townspeople.

Eventually captured by the Sheriff within the church, Robin faces punishment. Just as the Sheriff is about to execute justice, John reappears and betrays the soldiers, helping Robin to avert his fate. Together, they bind the Sheriff and enact poetic justice by hanging him.

As the dust settles, a now scarred Will finds himself entangled in the Sheriff’s remnants, leading to his own promotion as the new Sheriff. In a final act of defiance, Robin answers Will’s arrest warrant with a shot fired at the wanted sign, leaving their stories intertwined in the backdrop of a tumultuous England.
