Plot Summary

As the moon casts its silvery glow over Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, Johnny Talbot (son of Bill Talbot, played by Robert Forster) embarks on a perilous mission against the Taliban. However, his helicopter operation takes a deadly turn when it’s struck by a missile, leaving him and Ray in the clutches of their ruthless captors. The next morning, Johnny becomes the victim of a brutal inferno that consumes his body.

In London, Kate Abbott (Milla Jovovich) toils away at the American Embassy, driven by a sense of duty born from the devastating losses she suffered during 9/11. Meanwhile, an enigmatic figure known only as Nash (Pierce Brosnan) receives a package containing explosive powder disguised within a seemingly innocuous brick. Using his mobile phone as a trigger, he discreetly delivers it to a unsuspecting restaurant.

As Kate navigates the bureaucratic red tape at Vicker’s Pharmaceutical, seeking clearance and references for Dr. Perry regarding Dr. Balan, she’s met with resistance unless authorized by headquarters. Later, Inspector Paul Anderson confronts her about unauthorized inquiries into Dr. Balan’s affairs, while Agent Maureen Crane (Angela Bassett) expresses disappointment in Kate’s actions.

Kate and her four employees at the American Embassy plan to celebrate Bill Talbot’s birthday at the restaurant, but their festive plans are brutally derailed when Bill deletes five visa applicants using Kate’s account, citing their role in his son Johnny’s tragic demise in Afghanistan. As they arrive at the restaurant, Kate lingers outside to procure a last-minute gift for Bill.

Little do they know, Nash has been secretly manipulating events from behind the scenes. With a sinister grin, he activates the explosive device using his cell phone, claiming innocent lives and reducing the glassware owner’s thoughtful wrapping of Bill’s present to ashes. As Kate rushes to the scene to assess the devastating damage, she’s met with the heart-wrenching reality that her colleagues are no more.

Nash, feigning innocence as authorities close in, becomes embroiled in a desperate cat-and-mouse game with Kate, who is now the prime suspect for the bombing. As officials begin to label her a perpetrator of the atrocity, Kate finds herself forced into a perilous odyssey of survival and deception.

As fate would have it, Kate’s encounter with Bill Talbot at the park takes an unexpected turn when she discovers he is being coerced into facilitating visa applications for terrorists who had taken his son hostage. The two engage in a desperate struggle over the gun, and Kate, in a split second, inadvertently fires the weapon, leaving Bill gravely wounded. The nearby tourists are oblivious to the chaos unfolding before their eyes as they capture the poignant scene of Bill limping towards the fountain, Kate standing frozen with the gun still smoking. As Bill succumbs to his injuries beside the water feature, Kate attempts to confront Nash, only to realize her gun is empty and she must flee once more. The cunning operative swiftly seizes Bill’s identification card, which harbors a GPS chip tracking Kate’s every move.

Kate seeks refuge by calling on Lisa to bring vital supplies - including financial backing - to St. Pancras train station. Meanwhile, Dr. Balan unwittingly plays into Nash’s hands by installing a gas tank in a building for testing purposes. The villainous operative then uses his sniper rifle to detonate the tank, causing widespread destruction throughout the structure. This devastating demonstration serves as a chilling harbinger of the chaos that will soon engulf New York City on New Year’s Eve.

As Lisa heads to the train station, she is unaware that Nash’s men are hot on her heels. Back at the scene of Bill’s demise, Kate finds herself under intense surveillance after Nash discovers her location through his GPS chip. As he readies a spherical ball grenade, Kate and Lisa finally converge, but not before Nash radios his operatives to converge on their target. Coincidentally, Kate’s colleague Sam (Dylan McDermott), Inspector Paul Anderson, and their team are also closing in on her whereabouts.

Kate quickly seizes the necessities from Lisa and makes a break for it as Nash closes in once more. The authorities arrive, but Inspector Paul refuses to permit Sam to join them in the pursuit of Kate. Undeterred, Kate outmaneuvers her pursuers by descending into the subway’s lower levels. It is here that she encounters Nash, who attempts to dispose of her with a spherical ball grenade. However, Kate uses the device against him, ultimately stabbing him with a metal shard and making her escape.

As Kate surreptitiously slips into Bill’s apartment, she’s surprised to find Sam already in residence. Unbeknownst to her, Sam has been monitoring her situation and is convinced that she hasn’t done enough to address the attack. He reveals to Kate that Watchmaker Nash is the world’s most notorious assassin, and that he believes they’re being tracked. In a bold move, Sam decides to break Kate’s ID, aware that Nash is hot on their heels. Meanwhile, outside, Nash locates Kate in the apartment and begins to close in on her. Just as Nash approaches the room where Kate is hiding, she and Sam stumble upon Bill’s tape from the Taliban, containing his son’s poignant last words before he succumbed to his injuries.

As they frantically try to escape, Sam manages to get a hold of his men, only to discover that their communication has been compromised. The two operatives in the car have fallen victim to Nash’s ruthless tactics, leaving Sam and Kate in a desperate bid for survival. With Nash mere moments away from catching up with them, the apartment door explodes, seemingly claiming Sam’s life. Undeterred, Kate makes a break for it as Nash opens fire on her.

As Kate navigates the chaos, she finds solace in Sally (Frances de la Tour), an embassy employee who has been tracking her movements. Kate convinces Sally of her innocence, and the two concoct a plan to get her into the embassy. In order to shield Kate from detection, Sally shuts down all security cameras, clearing the way for her entry.

Once inside, Kate accesses Dr. Balan’s visa and discovers that the latest terrorist attack is imminent – this time in New York City. With time running out, Kate creates a fake passport as “Amy Harrison” just as marines invade the embassy.

Kate arrives in New York City, using her new identity to blend in with the crowd. As the clock strikes twenty-eight minutes before midnight, Dr. Balan masterminds a sinister plan to pipe gas into the Times Square Ball. Kate follows him to his hideout, where Nash awaits – armed and ready to blow up the iconic landmark as the New Year begins.

As the tension builds, Nash and Dr. Balan stab the latter in the neck, calculating that the resulting explosion will not cause widespread damage. Just as Nash prepares to pull the trigger, Kate intervenes, sparking a fierce battle between the two. In a decisive moment, Kate ultimately dispatches Nash by sending him tumbling off the rooftop as the clock strikes midnight.

As the authorities arrive on the scene, they’re met with the astonishing revelation that Kate has foiled the terrorist plot. Moments later, she receives a call from Sam – who miraculously survived his ordeal – announcing that his name has been cleared.

As the cinematic curtain draws to a close, a poignant postscript unfolds, illuminating the indelible impact of the traumatic events that have transpired. In the aftermath of the devastating September 11th attacks, the valiant efforts of American Law Enforcement prove instrumental in thwarting numerous terrorist plots within the city’s borders, a testament to their unwavering dedication and unshakeable resolve.
