As Kathy Bauer exchanged vows with the passionate Benny Cross, a dedicated member of the Vandals Motorcycle Club, photographer Danny Lyon became immersed in their vibrant yet tumultuous existence. His camera captured the intense emotions present in the club, particularly during an insightful interview with the enigmatic leader, Johnny Davis, whose authority was shaped by his experiences reminiscent of The Wild One. Yet, tension began to mount as Johnny’s autocratic approach clashed with the ambitions of a fellow Vandal eager to expand their influence across the Midwest.

By 1969, Benny found himself brutally attacked in a bar, narrowly escaping a horrific fate as a shovel swung just above his foot. In the aftermath, Johnny unleashed his vengeance upon Benny’s assailants, ordering the Vandals to destroy the bar completely. As Benny recuperated, Johnny urged him to rejoin the gang before he was fully healed, ignoring Kathy’s pleas against it.

Simultaneously, Johnny’s leadership faced challenges from rising contenders. A young delinquent known as The Kid sought to join the ranks of the Vandals. However, Johnny’s mistrust proved justified when the Kid’s eagerness to betray his friends resulted in his immediate rejection. In a desperate attempt to prove himself, the Kid launched a surprise knife attack on Johnny but faced a brutal beating and was warned never to return.

In 1973, Danny Lyon revisited the scene to document Kathy’s reflections on the Vandals’ decline. She recounted how Johnny’s spirit waned following the tragic loss of his loyal lieutenant, Brucie, and how the club’s increasing violence escalated with the return of drug-affected Vietnam veterans. A pivotal moment arose when longtime member Cockroach suffered a tragic fate after announcing his desire to leave the gang for a career in motorcycle policing. Kathy barely escaped a horrific fate at the hands of new recruits, thanks to Johnny’s timely intervention.

As Benny struggled with his own internal battles amidst the rising violence within the Vandals, Kathy insisted he leave the gang behind. Instead, he disappeared for days, causing her great distress. In a daring effort to save Cockroach from the grips of the increasingly brutal gang, Johnny and Benny executed a risky break-in, culminating in a non-fatal gunshot to Cockroach’s leg. This incident intensified Kathy’s determination to break free from the Vandals, while Benny’s refusal to accept Johnny’s offer of leadership signaled a turning point in their chaotic existence.

With The Kid solidifying his status within the Milwaukee chapter of the Vandals, he felt compelled to challenge Johnny in a brutal knife fight for supremacy—an encounter that ultimately led to Johnny’s demise. In the aftermath, Kathy revealed to Lyon the grim transformation of the Vandals into a powerful criminal organization, driven by drug trafficking and violence. The older members found themselves at a crossroads: submit to The Kid’s ruthless regime, seek legitimate work, or meet a tragic end.

Benny was overwhelmed with grief upon learning of Johnny’s tragic fate, leading him home in despair. He and Kathy aimed for a fresh start in Florida, where Benny exchanged his biker lifestyle for the routine life of a mechanic. According to Kathy, this new chapter brought happiness, as Benny seemed content to leave his past behind. Yet, the distant sound of motorcycles would often draw his attention, sparking a nostalgic smile as he gazed longingly at the world beyond their suburban oasis.
