She gained recognition mainly for her stellar performance of Janice Soprano on the critically acclaimed HBO drama series, The Sopranos. Her initial formative steps in the field were marked by her earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre from the prestigious State University of New York at New Paltz. She embarked on her acting journey with the film True Love in 1989 and subsequently appeared in films such as What About Bob?, Jersey Girl, Illuminata, Sleepers, and Deep Blue Sea, demonstrating a diverse acting range. She gained significant roles in television as well, most notably appearing as Janice Soprano in 49 episodes of The Sopranos, for which she received two nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Her other TV appearances include the CBS series Medium, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Nurse Jackie, Blue Bloods, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Turturro's portrayal of various intriguing characters has not only displayed her versatility but also established her as an eminent figure in the industry. In 2016, she executed the role of Maura Figgis in the sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine and in 2017 she took part in the second season of Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.
