What's After the Movie

Byron Langley

Byron John Langley was born on November 11, 1926, in the small farming community of Warwick, North Dakota, where the endless prairie horizon shaped his lifelong devotion to the land. Raised on a family farm, he learned the rigors of agriculture and ranching from an early age, developing a work ethic that would later define his public service. After marrying Deloris Forde in 1947, the couple raised five children—James, Gene, Preston, Darla, and Maxine—instilling in them the same respect for hard work and community responsibility that Byron embodied. Throughout the mid‑20th century, Langley expanded his operations to include both crop production and cattle ranching, becoming a well‑known figure in local markets and agricultural fairs. His involvement extended beyond the farm; he was an active member of the Warwick Lutheran Church, the Warwick Rod and Gun Club, and the North Dakota Stockmen's Association, frequently volunteering his time to support fellow farmers.

Langley's entry into politics began in 1973 when he was elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives for the 12th district, a seat he held until 1980. After a brief hiatus, he returned to public office as a state senator from 1985 to 1996, during which he chaired the Senate Industry, Business and Labor Committee and served on Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Waste Management committees. In 1993 his peers elected him President Pro Tempore, a testament to his diplomatic skill and deep knowledge of rural issues. A staunch advocate for responsible land management, he championed legislation that balanced economic growth with environmental stewardship, often placing the needs of North Dakota's prairie families above partisan politics. Beyond the Capitol, he contributed to the Governor's Fuel Assistance Advisory Commission, the Veterinarian School Committee of the Old West Regional Commission, and served as a trustee of the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame. Byron Langley retired from politics in 1996, yet continued to mentor emerging leaders until his passing on January 13, 2018, leaving an indelible legacy of service, humor, and dedication to the North Dakota way of life.
