A recognisable figure in the films of Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder, DeLuise also formed a series of collaborations and a double act with Burt Reynolds. With his captivating voice, he brought life to characters in several major animated productions in the 1980s, particularly those animated by Don Bluth. DeLuise's robust career saw him stage his debut at 18, participate in off-Broadway musical revues and plays, and shine in comedic parts on film and television. Also an author of several cookbooks and children's books, he passed away on May 4, 2009, in Santa Monica, California, leaving an indelible mark in the entertainment industry.

DeLuise was born to Italian American parents, with his early life in Brooklyn offering a rich cultural backdrop for his creative career. After graduating from Manhattan's High School of Performing Arts and attending Tufts University, DeLuise delved into professional acting.
