Kenji Sahara, born Masayoshi Kato on 14 May 1932 in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa, Japan, is a celebrated Japanese actor whose career spanned six decades from the early 1950s to 2013. Initially performing under the name Tadashi Ishihara, he adopted the stage name Kenji Sahara after securing the lead role in the iconic Toho monster film Rodan (1956), a decision that cemented his lasting association with the studio’s special‑effects classics. Sahara’s first screen appearance came in 1953, and he quickly became a reliable presence in Toho’s prolific output, appearing in more Godzilla movies than any other actor, from the original Godzilla (1954) to Godzilla: Final Wars (2004). His versatility allowed him to move fluidly between heroic leads and nuanced supporting roles, such as Dr. Masada in The H‑Man (1958) and the corrupt businessman Jiro Torahata in Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964). Directors Ishirō Honda and Eiji Tsuburaya relied on Sahara’s steady performances, often casting him as military officers, scientists, or determined pilots, which contributed to the mythic atmosphere of Japan’s kaiju cinema. Beyond the monster genre, Sahara achieved fame as a mainstay of the Ultraman franchise, originating the role of Jun Manjoume in the groundbreaking series Ultra Q (1966) and reprising the character across multiple sequels, including Ultraman 80 (1980‑81) and Ultraman Mebius (2006‑07).
