Marlon Brando Jr. (April 3, 1924 – July 1, 2004) was an American actor and film director who had a significant impact on film acting. Recognised as one of the greatest actors of the 20th century, Brando came to prominence during the late 1940s till the 1970s. He became widely regarded for his unconventional and intense style of method acting, brought to mainstream audiences by Stella Adler, to which he was greatly influenced during the 1940s. His powerful and passionate performances were thoroughly admired and he gained much recognition for his remarkable ability to embed himself in his characters. Notably known for his emotional performances in A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront, both directed by Elia Kazan in the early 1950s, and his academy award-winning performance as Vito Corleone in The Godfather (1972).
