What's After the Movie
Tadao Takashima (27 July 1930 – 26 June 2019) was a prolific Japanese actor and jazz musician whose career spanned more than six decades, encompassing over one hundred film appearances, stage performances, and television appearances. Born in Kobe, Japan, Takashima first discovered his love for music while studying at Kwansei Gakuin University, where he joined a jazz band that honed his improvisational skills and stage confidence. He left university before graduating to pursue a contract with the Shintoho studio, making his acting debut in 1952 and quickly establishing himself as a versatile talent capable of handling both comedic and dramatic roles. His breakout role came in the 1962 kaiju classic King Kong vs. Godzilla, where he shared the screen with Yū Fujiki, a partnership that continued in a series of popular salary‑man comedies that resonated with post‑war audiences. In addition to his film work, Takashima earned acclaim on the theater stage, most notably portraying Professor Henry Higgins in the 1963 Japanese production of My Fair Lady, showcasing his ability to sing and act with equal finesse. He subsequently became a familiar face on television, appearing on quiz shows such as Quiz! Do‑re‑mi‑fa‑don! and the culinary program Gochisosama, further cementing his status as a beloved entertainment figure. Takashima’s personal life was marked by both tragedy and continuity; he married former Takarazuka Revue performer Hanayo Sumi in 1963, endured the heartbreaking loss of his infant son the following year, and later raised two surviving sons, Masahiro and Masanobu, who followed in his footsteps as actors. Despite a bout of depression in 1998, he recovered and continued to work up until his death of natural causes at his Tokyo home in 2019, leaving behind a rich legacy that reflects the evolution of Japanese popular culture throughout the twentieth century.
