What's After the Movie
Trevor Jamieson, born on 7 March 1975 in Subioco, Western Australia, is a prominent Aboriginal Australian artist whose work spans acting, play‑writing, dancing, singing and didgeridoo performance. He grew up across the gold‑fields region of Western Australia, moving between Kalgoorlie, Esperance and Norseman, while his family roots spread across the Central Desert, including the Nullarbor and Maralinga areas. On his father’s side he is connected to the Pitjantjara and Kukatja peoples, and on his mother’s side to the Noongar nation of south‑western WA. His early exposure to drama came through his aunt Lynette Markle, a relative of celebrated playwright Jack Davis, and a decisive audition for the touring musical Bran Nue Dae in 1993 launched his professional journey. Jamieson’s cultural heritage infuses every performance, and his personal story—shaped by the intergenerational impacts of forced removals and the legacy of nuclear testing at Maralinga—has become a powerful narrative thread in his community‑focused projects.
Since his debut, Jamieson has become a versatile force on stage and screen. He co‑created the award‑winning language‑revitalisation piece Ngapartji Ngapartji, narrated his own family’s history and performed at the Sydney Opera House, while his portrayals of iconic figures such as Albert Namatjira earned a Helpmann Award for Best Regional Touring Production. Notable stage credits include Storm Boy (as Fingerbone Bill), Dirtsong with the Black Arm Band, and the opera Voss in 2022. In film, his role as Fingerbone Bill in the 2019 adaptation of Storm Boy fulfilled a lifelong dream, allowing him to collaborate with Ngarrindjeri elders to ensure cultural authenticity. Recognised with a Deadly Award for Most Outstanding Achievement in Film, TV or Theatre (2008) and a Sydney Theatre Award for Best Actor (2008), Jamieson continues to champion Indigenous storytelling through a blend of performance, music and activism.
