On Christmas Eve, siblings Andrea, Moppet, and Patrick find themselves under the watch of their Aunt Ruth, following the recent passing of their mother and their father’s urgent departure for work. To entertain the children, Aunt Ruth spins a captivating Christmas tale. Meanwhile, in a forest, Nikolas lives with his father Joel, a woodcutter. Two years have passed since the loss of Nikolas’s mother, and each night, he seeks solace in the legend of Elfhelm, a magical realm said to be inhabited by elves who protected a young girl during a harsh winter.
One evening, a mouse attempts to steal food from Nikolas but is spared, receiving the name Miika. Determined to teach the little creature to speak, he nurtures the bond between them. In a twist of fate, the King promises a significant reward to anyone who can locate an object that bestows hope upon the kingdom. Compelled by this call, Joel joins a group of hunters in search of Elfhelm, leaving Nikolas with the unkind Aunt Carlotta.
Discovering a map that points to Elfhelm, Nikolas embarks on a journey to reunite with his father and present him with the map. Throughout this adventure, he learns that Miika can now talk, igniting the hope necessary to continue. Upon reaching the Half Moon Forest, a reindeer named Blitzen allows Nikolas to ride him. Although they finally arrive at Elfhelm, they are met with disappointment, finding only Joel’s knife left behind.
Disheartened, Nikolas collapses but is discovered by Little Noosh and Father Topo. The wise Father Topo provides a “hope spell” that revitalizes him and reveals that Elfhelm is only visible to those who believe. With newfound faith, Nikolas witnesses Elfhelm’s wonders and wishes to remain, but soon learns that a group of humans, including Joel, have captured a small elf named Little Kip. When sentenced to be consumed by a troll in the Dark Tower, Nikolas escapes with the assistance of a young fairy, the Truth Pixie.
Determined to clear up the misunderstanding involving Joel’s party, he departs the enchanted site. In the woods, he encounters the hunters and Little Kip, inevitably discovering that his father is among them. After a moment of reflection, Joel devises a plan to rescue Nikolas, Little Kip, and Blitzen, prompting a daring escape from their pursuers. However, Blitzen sacrifices himself to enable the others to flee.
With Little Kip in tow, Nikolas returns to Elfhelm, managing to arrive just in time to save the little elf from punishment. As a token of gratitude for his bravery, Little Kip’s parents present Nikolas with traditional elfin toys. Inspired, he hatches a plan for the elves to create a multitude of gifts and candies. Just as he prepares to ride Blitzen and deliver the bounty, he encounters Mother Vodol, who recognizes the locket he clutches, which depicts his mother’s portrait. Mother Vodol reveals that the girl in the legend who discovered Elfhelm is indeed Nikolas’s mother.
Disheartened by the loss of faith in humans after Joel’s actions, Mother Vodol learns that Nikolas’s mother always cherished her time in Elfhelm. Armed with the hope of delivering joy, Nikolas travels back to the kingdom, presenting one of the toys to the King. When questioned about the gift’s significance, Nikolas seizes the opportunity to spread kindness by distributing toys throughout the land, ensuring he does so without disturbing the slumbering children.
Moved by Nikolas’s selfless deeds, the King pledges to assist him further. As the tale concludes, Aunt Ruth elucidates the essence of Nikolas’s journey, highlighting how one child has begun to grapple with the reality of their mother’s absence. Miraculously, their father returns, confronting a living room brimming with festive decorations and gifts. In a whimsical finale, Aunt Ruth departs, tossing a firecracker that unveils her true identity as the Truth Pixie.
