What city does Andre feel lost in despite living in America?
Get the full story of Angel-A with a detailed plot summary. Dive into its themes, characters, and the twists that make it a must-watch.
A freeze frame introduces Andre, portrayed by Jamel Debbouze, who shares his inner thoughts through a voiceover. He reveals that although he resides in America, he finds himself in Paris, grappling with his own honesty. Despite considering himself a “good guy,” he admits to constantly lying, even to himself. The scene swiftly transitions as he is suddenly knocked to the ground by three thugs demanding repayment of his debts.
In a dramatic turn, we see him being dangled over the edge of the Eiffel Tower by a bodyguard belonging to Franck (played by Gilbert Melki), who issues the same demand for payment. Despair fills Andre as he seeks help from both the American embassy and a Parisian police station, only to find himself turned away with no assistance.
Feeling hopeless, Andre contemplates suicide by leaping off a bridge into the Seine. However, he notices a stunning young woman, Angela, portrayed by Rie Rasmussen, who stands by the railing. In a twist of fate, she jumps, prompting Andre to dive in after her, ensuring her safety. Angela reveals that she had also attempted to end her life due to similar struggles. In gratitude for her rescue, she vows to dedicate herself to helping Andre.
Eager to impress Franck, Andre thinks bringing Angela along will garner respect. While Franck remains indifferent to him, Angela successfully negotiates in private and emerges with good news: Andre’s debt is forgiven, and she presents him with a substantial sum of cash. Although initially suspicious, believing Angela might have compromised herself, he ultimately accepts the money when he realizes his financial situation is dire.
Desperate for more funds, Angela proposes a plan where she seduces men at a nightclub, luring them into the restroom in exchange for cash. Andre feels repulsed by her actions and voices his discontent. At another club, he encounters Pedro (Serge Riaboukine), who advises him to wager the cash on a seemingly rigged horse race. Ignoring Angela’s warnings, Andre places all their money on the horse, which inevitably comes in last.
Once again in despair, Andre learns from Angela that she is, in fact, an angel sent to assist him. Skeptical at first, he is amazed when she demonstrates her celestial powers, such as levitating objects. With newfound hope, Andre asks Angela to help with the three thugs pursuing him, and she swiftly dispatches them. Through her guidance, he begins to see the goodness within himself and discovers that Angela had not been intimate with any of the men she encountered in the restroom, as she simply incapacitated them.
Emboldened by Angela’s support, Andre decides to confront Franck, yearning to be truthful for once. In a daring move, Angela breaks into Franck’s hotel room, subduing his guards. Franck, mistaking Andre’s intentions, begs for mercy as Andre sincerely apologizes for borrowing money. He then speaks of the love he has found in Angela, profoundly affecting her as she steps away, moved by his heartfelt admission.
Andre chases after Angela, ultimately finding her on the bridge where they first crossed paths. She expresses that her mission has concluded and prepares to leave. He desperately confesses his love, but she tries to explain that they cannot be together. In a stunning transformation, she reveals angelic wings and begins to ascend. Not willing to let go, Andre grasps her, causing them both to tumble into the Seine once again. Emerging from the water, they find themselves together, with Angela celebrating her regained connection with Andre, devoid of her wings but full of joy.
