At a clandestine U.S. government facility known as Area X, located on a southern coast, Lena, portrayed by Natalie Portman, a cellular biology professor and former U.S. Army soldier, is subjected to a detailed debriefing regarding her harrowing expedition into an enigmatic phenomenon called the Shimmer. Strikingly, Lena and her husband are the only survivors of this expedition, which raises a multitude of questions as to what transpired within the shimmering borders. During the interrogation, it is revealed that Lena endured the perils of the Shimmer for an astonishing four months, despite her team’s supplies being intended for a mere two-week journey. Tragically, Lena discloses that two members of her team lost their lives, while the whereabouts of the other two remain shrouded in mystery.

The Shimmer first made its appearance three years prior, following the crash of a meteor at a lighthouse within the protected St. Mark’s National Wildlife Refuge in Florida. This remarkable phenomenon continues to expand inexorably, prompting numerous exploratory missions in a desperate attempt to understand its nature. In a bewildering flashback, Lena’s husband, Kane, played by Oscar Isaac, unexpectedly returns home after a year of being missing during a mission tied to the Shimmer. His arrival is disconcertingly emotionless, creating a chasm between him and Lena, leaving her unsettled and concerned about what may have transpired during his absence.

As Kane grapples with a significant health crisis, Lena, who teaches at a university alongside her colleague Daniel (played by David Gyasi), recalls the oppressive atmosphere preceding his departure, as if the world held its breath in anticipation. An armed government unit intercepts them en route to the hospital, whisking them away to the mysterious Area X—an increasingly secretive zone that threatens to engulf cities as its radius widens.

Within the confines of Area X, psychologist Dr. Ventress, skillfully portrayed by Jennifer Jason Leigh, persuades Lena to join her scientific team on a project to investigate the Shimmer. She explains that military squads, including one that Kane was part of, ventured into the Shimmer with the objective of reaching the lighthouse—the epicenter where the shimmer first manifested. Unfortunately, no one ever returned from these expeditions, with Kane now in a coma due to severe organ failure.

The government is shifting its strategy by deploying a scientific team, determined to gather invaluable data and, hopefully, to return with their findings. Accompanying Lena on this perilous journey are Josie Radeck, represented by Tessa Thompson, Cass Sheppard (played by Tuva Novotny), and paramedic Anya Thorensen (played by Gina Rodriguez). Lena keeps her true relationship with Kane a secret from her team, only sharing her motives with Ventress, emphasizing that she cannot help Kane from outside the Shimmer, and thus feels compelled to uncover the truth.

As they delve deeper into the anomaly, two theories emerge: either the environment itself is deadly, or the psychological strain triggers violent behavior among the team members. Communication and navigational tools begin to falter, causing the team to experience gaps in their memories. After only a few days, they find themselves inexplicably disoriented, with precious time lost unaccounted for.

Their expedition takes a horrifying turn as they encounter bizarre mutations among flora and fauna, including a terrifying encounter with a monstrous alligator exhibiting hybrid traits with a shark. The team’s trepidation mounts as the Shimmer’s influences become evident, and the closer they move to the lighthouse, the more virulent these mutations appear to be. Discovering a derelict military base serves as a somber reminder of Kane’s mission; horrifying video footage reveals that Kane cut open a living expedition member, exposing a strange, writhing organism within.

As night descends, tension escalates when a mutated, bear-like creature claims the life of Cass. The remaining team members grow paranoid and suspicious of one another, leading to further turmoil and loss. When Anya falls victim to the creature that killed Cass, Lena and the others are pushed to their limits. Driven by research, Ventress is determined to confront the Shimmer’s origin, leaving Lena with difficult choices as they approach their destination.

As they tread onward, they discover a bizarre settlement filled with humanoid-shaped plants, where Josie articulates that the Shimmer distorts and alters everything within its reach. This revelation is confirmed when Lena tests her own blood, and chaos ensues when Anya’s paranoia leads to an assault on her teammates, culminating in a savage attack by the creature which takes Anya’s life.

In the showdown at the lighthouse, Lena learns the fate of Kane and confronts the transmutative forces at play. Ventress’s transformation into a luminous entity symbolizes the Shimmer’s essence, consuming parts of Lena’s identity. Utilizing the creature’s ability to mimic, Lena sets a phosphorus grenade against it, igniting a catastrophic explosion that obliterates the lighthouse and causes the Shimmer’s eerie reign to finally diminish.

Lena’s harrowing debriefing comes to a close as she is reunited with Kane, who has miraculously regained consciousness. However, he poses a haunting question about his own identity, asking, “I don’t think so,” casting a chilling doubt over the nature of their reunion. As they embrace, their irises shimmer and shift colors, leaving the audience to ponder the profound implications of identity, loss, and transformation.
