Armageddon 1998

While on a mission to repair a satellite in space, the Space Shuttle Atlantis meets a catastrophic end due to a meteor shower, tragically taking the lives of its crew. Following this disaster, meteorites unleash chaos on New York City and other global locations. NASA’s scientists make a startling discovery: a Texas-sized asteroid hurtling toward Earth at a staggering speed of 22,000 miles per hour, set to collide with the planet in just 18 days, threatening total annihilation. Together with international space agencies from Russia, Japan, and Europe, NASA devises a desperate plan—a nuclear bomb must be planted beneath the asteroid’s surface to split it apart and steer it away from Earth. However, this dangerous mission is shrouded in secrecy to prevent public panic.

NASA seeks the assistance of Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis), a skilled oil driller, to spearhead the drilling operation on the asteroid. Determined to keep his daughter Grace (Liv Tyler) safe from her reckless boyfriend A.J. (Ben Affleck), who is part of Harry’s crew, he brings her along to the NASA facility, inciting a confrontation between father and daughter regarding A.J.’s intentions. The head of NASA, Dan Truman (Billy Bob Thornton), briefs Harry on the gravity of the situation. Acknowledging the dire need for expertise, Harry agrees to gather his crew to embark on a training program designed to prepare them for the treacherous journey ahead.

The gravity of the mission becomes evident when a meteorite obliterates Shanghai, unveiling the asteroid threat to the world. Two military shuttles, known as Freedom and Independence, are dispatched to rendezvous at a Russian space station for a refueling operation. Unfortunately, chaos ensues as A.J. inadvertently causes the station to explode during the refueling process, forcing the crew, including the station’s commander Lev Andropov (Peter Stormare), to escape just in time.

After an intense maneuver around the Moon, the team faces another harrowing event: Independence is struck by debris and crash-lands on the asteroid, resulting in the loss of many crew members. Remaining crew members A.J., Lev, and Bear survive, but Freedom lands on an inhospitable area, hindering their drilling efforts. As communication with Earth falters, hope begins to dwindle.

With a bomb hastily activated by orders from the US President, failure to divert the asteroid means doom is imminent. Understanding the stakes, Harry manages to convince Colonel Sharp (William Fichtner) to disarm the bomb, allowing the surviving crew a fighting chance to complete their mission. Just when they believe all is lost, Harry rallies the team to continue drilling, but a fatal gas explosion claims the life of crew member Max.

The world reels as catastrophic meteors decimate major cities, spreading panic among humanity as they brace for extinction. Yet amidst the chaos, it is revealed that A.J. and Lev have located another drilling machine, giving them renewed hope. With tenacity, they complete the drilling task and lower the nuclear bomb into the prepared hole. However, their mission is interrupted by a violent rock storm that damages their detonation equipment.

With a mere 18 minutes left until impact, a solemn decision is made—one must sacrifice themselves to ensure Earth’s survival. A.J. initially volunteers but Harry, in a moment of selflessness, disables A.J.’s air supply and takes on the mission himself. As he parts ways with his daughter in a heartfelt message, Harry detonates the bomb at the final moment, heroically splitting the asteroid and saving Earth, though at the ultimate cost of his own life. The surviving crew members return as heroes, honored to remember their lost companions.

In the aftermath, A.J. finds solace in his reunion with Grace, while their love flourishes into marriage. The sacrifices of Harry and his fellow astronauts remain enshrined in memory, marking a poignant chapter in humanity’s battle against oblivion.
