What was the primary motive for Mike Turner and his crew to board the Poseidon?

Plot Summary

As the ravaged luxury liner S.S. Poseidon remained afloat, six survivors had already been plucked from the waves by the French Coast Guard. Meanwhile, tugboat captain Mike Turner (actor name) chanced upon the rescue helicopter and, accompanied by his trusted second mate Wilbur and passenger Celeste Whitman, set out to stake their claim on salvage rights. Their mission was motivated by the loss of their own cargo on the ill-fated Jenny, which had also fallen prey to the tsunami that had capsized the Poseidon.

Their expedition was soon followed by Dr. Stefan Svevo and his purported Greek Orthodox medical crew, who claimed to have received the ship’s distress signal. As they boarded the vessel through the gaping hull opening left behind by the French rescue team, they stumbled upon the still-raging fires in the engine room, the twisted red valve wheel that had once been grasped by Reverend Scott, and the tragic remains of Linda Rogo, whose ill-fated descent to her death had been depicted in The Poseidon Adventure.

The very presence of these medics seemed to awaken a fresh sense of urgency, as an explosion rocked the ship’s depths. Wilbur cautioned Turner that the Poseidon was now a floating time bomb, but Turner remained steadfast in his determination to press on. As they navigated the treacherous vessel, they chanced upon additional survivors: the ship’s nurse, Gina Rowe; elegantly attired Suzanne Constantine and war veteran Frank Mazzetti, whose desperate search for his missing daughter Theresa was driven by a sense of paternal responsibility.

Theresa was eventually found alive, along with elevator operator Larry Simpson and the enigmatic “Tex,” who clung to a valuable bottle of wine. The group also discovered Harold Meredith and his wife Hannah, who had been waiting patiently for rescue. Water continued to seep onto the decks, punctuated by additional explosions that threatened to send the ship into further chaos.

As Turner’s group explored the purser’s office, Svevo decided to split off with his men, leaving the rest of the survivors in their wake. A subsequent explosion sent the safe tumbling open, revealing a trove of gold coins, diamonds, and cash. Turner and Wilbur quickly gathered up the treasure.

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Turner and the survivors, Suzanne was secretly working with Svevo. She pilfered a crucial document detailing a cargo of crates from the office before rejoining Turner’s group. However, her decision to betray them would ultimately prove fatal, as Svevo ordered one of his men, Doyle, to eliminate her. As she lay dying, Suzanne exacted a measure of revenge by striking Doyle with an axe, ending his life.

In their ascent through the ship’s decks, Turner and the others stumbled upon Suzanne’s lifeless body, only to realize that they were not alone in their struggle for survival – a murderer lurked among them, waiting to strike again.

As Hannah (character name) strains her shoulder in an act of devotion to her husband, Svevo’s sinister intentions are revealed: he’s been secretly gathering a cache of plutonium on board the Poseidon. His true purpose now exposed, Svevo makes it clear that Turner and his group are no longer free to leave - but fate intervenes once more as another explosion rocks the ship, allowing Turner’s party to make their escape.

Armed with newfound firepower, Turner (actor name), Mazzetti, and Simpson engage in a frantic gunfight with Svevo’s henchmen. The toll is steep: Mazzetti and Castrop meet their maker, while Hannah, left behind in the chaos, succumbs to her injuries as the rising waters claim her life. In his desperate attempt to rescue his wife, Turner loses the precious gold he’d salvaged, a cruel reminder of the devastating consequences of Svevo’s treachery.

Meanwhile, Svevo and his remaining loyalist press on, attempting to salvage their plutonium cargo from the sinking ship. As the stern of the Poseidon slips beneath the surface, its hull groaning in protest, Turner and the survivors make their way through an underwater exit door, only to find themselves facing a desperate bid for survival.

Wilbur, gravely injured, sacrifices his life to ensure that Turner’s group can escape safely, disappearing into the depths as they swim towards the tugboat. As Svevo’s men open fire, Tex - a sommelier masquerading as a wealthy passenger - clings to his wine bottle in a futile attempt to preserve it, meeting a tragic end amidst the carnage.

The surviving passengers of the Poseidon manage to board the tugboat, only for the ship to erupt in a cataclysmic explosion, sending its hull plummeting stern-first into the depths. Svevo and his loyalists meet their demise as the ship goes down, consumed by the very disaster they’d sought to profit from.

As the sun dips below the horizon, Turner comes to terms with the loss of his tugboat, only for Celeste to produce a glimmer of hope - a salvaged diamond recovered from the Poseidon’s wreckage. In a poignant moment of tenderness, the two share a kiss as their vessel sails off into the sunset, leaving behind a grim tally of survivors: ten souls who’ve managed to escape the abyssal depths of tragedy and despair.
