What was the value of the diamond Miles Logan stole?

Plot Summary

In a daring heist, Jewel thief extraordinaire Miles Logan (Martin Lawrence) pulls off an audacious $17 million diamond swindle in Los Angeles with his trusted cohorts: Eddie (John Hawkes), Tulley (Dave Chappelle), and the newly recruited Deacon (Peter Greene). With lightning-quick reflexes, Miles successfully pilfers the prized gemstone, but the scheme takes a deadly turn when Deacon betrays the group, brutally murdering Eddie in a heartless act of betrayal. As police converge on the scene, Miles makes a split-second decision to stash the diamond in the ducts of an under-construction building, which was part of their carefully laid escape plan. With Deacon fleeing and Miles left for dead, he finds himself behind bars.

Two years later, after serving his time, Miles sets out to rekindle his romance with Janiece (Tamala Jones), only to be met with rejection due to his dishonesty about his criminal past. Seething with frustration, Miles becomes hell-bent on reclaiming the diamond, leading him on a perilous quest to infiltrate the very same building where he originally hid it - now an LAPD police station. As he dons a pizza deliveryman disguise and acquires an access card, Miles pays a visit to his resourceful Uncle Lou (Richard C. Sarafian), who forges a convincing police badge and transfer papers. With these new credentials, Miles poses as Detective Malone and gains entry into the station.

In a series of hilarious misadventures, Miles’s attempt to retrieve the diamond inadvertently leads him to foil a prisoner escape in progress. As he scrambles to access the ducts, he finds himself paired with rookie Detective Carlson (Luke Wilson). What was supposed to be a quick in-and-out operation turns into a marathon mission as Miles becomes embroiled in a series of high-stakes police cases. His uncanny ability to anticipate and solve crimes earns him instant popularity among his new colleagues, ultimately propelling him to the top spot as detective in charge of the Robbery/Homicide division.

As they respond to their first call together, Miles (no last name) and Carlson embark on a journey of deception and discovery. Initially dispatched to investigate a reported burglary, Miles quickly unravels the case as a clever ruse by the victim, a car dealer seeking to capitalize on a plummeting market value. The owner’s claim of $5000 worth of stolen rims is revealed as a desperate attempt to inflate their insurance payout. With the fraud exposed, Miles and Carlson head back to the precinct, only to stumble upon an armed robbery in progress at a local grocery store.

Miles springs into action, apprehending the perpetrator, Tulley, before he can inflict harm on anyone else. In a tense standoff, Miles negotiates with Tulley, offering a deal that would spare him from a lengthy stint behind bars in exchange for his silence regarding Miles’ true identity. The clever detective’s counteroffer of $20,000 and a single night in jail is accepted, and the matter seems resolved.

However, Miles’ pursuit of the elusive diamond remains unresolved. He launches another attempt to locate the gem, this time venturing into the ductwork only to find that his previous efforts had been foiled by a leaky ventilation system. Undeterred, he conducts a thorough search of the floor and ultimately recovers the diamond from its hiding place within the AC vent.

Just as Miles is about to reunite with Carlson, their superior officer intervenes, revealing that Miles’ cover has been blown. The detective must think fast, convincing Carlson that his concerns are unfounded and that he’s simply an undercover agent from Internal Affairs. This ruse allows Miles to regroup and refocus on his mission, but not before they’re dispatched to investigate a reported theft at the airport.

The case unfolds as a clever drug trafficking operation, with museum artifacts serving as a clever smokescreen. Malone’s expertise proves invaluable in uncovering the true nature of the heist, and the team ultimately seizes a truckload of heroin. In a stunning turn of events, Miles retrieves the diamond from the evidence locker only to inadvertently drop it into the seized drugs.

As the FBI demands the heroin for testing purposes, Deacon tracks down Miles through his informant, Lou. Panic sets in as Miles proposes an audacious plan to use the drugs as bait in a sting operation. The risky strategy involves delivering the heroin at its intended destination and waiting for the owner to appear, allowing them to be arrested.

As Malone orchestrates his plan to infiltrate the drug delivery truck, an unexpected twist unfolds as Tulley (formerly held captive) and Deacon join him in the high-stakes operation without being detected. Meanwhile, Deacon has already gotten the jump on Miles by snatching the valuable diamond from its hiding place among the drugs. The tension escalates as Miles and Tulley attempt to divert attention away from their illicit activities, but just as they’re about to seal the deal, law enforcement and federal agents burst onto the scene, exposing Miles’ true identity to the drug runners.

In a daring move, Deacon makes off with the diamond in an armored truck, with the authorities hot on his heels as he approaches the Mexico border. The pursuit is halted at the crossing point, but Miles seizes the opportunity to commandeer a patrol car and give chase, forcing Deacon’s truck to wreck and offering him a Faustian bargain: surrender the diamond in exchange for Miles’ help in returning him to US soil. Deacon agrees, only to be double-crossed by Miles, who handcuffs him to the mangled wreckage and leaves him at the mercy of Mexican authorities.

In a moment of cold calculation, Miles executes Deacon, avenging the death of his former partner Eddie. With his conscience momentarily clear, Miles crosses back into Mexico, where he’s confronted by both FBI and police agencies demanding explanations for his actions. He spins a web of deception, claiming to be an undercover Mexican officer required to report back to his fellow agents.

However, Carlson and Hardcastle (William Forsythe) are not fooled, revealing they know the truth about Miles’ identity. Rather than arresting him, they express gratitude for his aid and consider him a friend. They also point out that international borders offer Miles a degree of protection from the FBI, as he’s now just a few inches over the line. With a mix of sadness and resignation, Miles says goodbye to his colleagues and heads into Mexico with the diamond in tow.
