As two sleek F-35 Lightning II fighters brazenly breach Chinese airspace, a sonic boom of chaos erupts near the coast, shattering the tranquility of an oil refinery and disrupting the peaceful rhythms of local fishing boats. Chinese pilot Lei Yu (Yibo Wang), piloting his trusty Chengdu J-10, springs into action, pushing the limits of his aircraft to counter the supersonic intruders. Though he successfully intercepts the F-35s, the intensity of the pursuit takes a toll on his jet, causing engine problems and a flame-out during a vertical climb. With no choice but to make an emergency landing, Lei Yu’s pride and prowess are put to the test.

In a tense meeting with his superiors, Lei Yu is rebuked for pushing his aircraft too far, but he passionately defends his actions, arguing that it was the only way to engage the superior enemy. The higher-ups concur, acknowledging the pressing issue: foreign 5th generation fighters hold a significant advantage over their Chinese counterparts due to outdated jet engines. This realization sparks a sense of urgency and sets the stage for a bold new initiative.

Behind closed doors, Commander Zhang Ting (Jun Hu) extends an invitation to Lei Yu to join the secretive development of China’s cutting-edge 5th generation Chengdu J-20 stealth fighter program. Intrigued by the prospect, Lei Yu agrees to participate, joining a team of skilled test pilots including Deng Fang, Gao Yingjun (Yu Bu), Xia Pengfei (Yujia Zhai), Li Xiaohang (Xin Lu), Tong Gan (Zichen Wang), and others.

At the training facility, Lei Yu and his squadron embark on an arduous journey, pushing their physical and mental limits to the breaking point. The J-20 prototype still relies on the WS-13 Taishan engine, which is yet to be fully refined. To compensate for this shortcoming, the team uses alternative jets to test the engine’s capabilities before installing it in the J-20.

During a crucial flight test with Commander Ting, Lei Yu and his commander find themselves facing a sudden loss of thrust, sending them plummeting into a spiral dive. Lei Yu’s instincts scream “danger,” prompting him to eject from the aircraft, while Commander Ting manages to regain control, landing the plane safely. The test data is rendered useless due to instrument failure, rendering their efforts futile.

The incident ultimately grounds Lei Yu, forcing him to leave the training facility. During his hiatus, he dedicates himself to studying the mechanical flaws and proposes a revolutionary anti-stall parachute system. This innovative design aims to ensure the safety of test pilots and aircraft while preserving crucial data without risking instrument failure.

As Ting’s final day draws to a close, he decides to take Lei Yu along for a last-minute test flight, hoping to validate the J-11’s engine and missile capabilities. The plan is to ingest the smoke from the missiles into the engines, a crucial experiment that could make or break the fighter’s performance. However, fate has other plans as both engines suffer a catastrophic failure due to overheating, sending flames engulfing the aircraft.

With the situation spiraling out of control, Ting and Lei Yu agree to eject together, but Ting makes the ultimate sacrifice by choosing to stay at the controls, expertly guiding the jet away from populated areas to prevent civilian casualties. His heroic act comes at a great cost, as Ting ultimately gives his life for the greater good.

In the aftermath, Zhang’s untimely demise leaves Deng Fang (Yosh Yu) to take up the mantle as chief pilot of the unit. Lei Yu, still reeling from Ting’s passing, finds solace in his work and becomes determined to contribute to China’s success in developing a stealth fighter that can rival foreign powers.

Undeterred by his personal loss, Lei Yu throws himself into designing an anti-stall parachute deployment system for the J-11. After countless hours of testing and refinement, he finally perfects the system, paving the way for the jet’s future development.

Meanwhile, the engineering team works tirelessly to modify the engine design, ensuring it can withstand the intense heat generated by the missile exhaust without overheating or rupturing. Their efforts culminate in a successful test firing of three missiles, with the smoke ingested into the engines to validate the new design.

As Lei Yu and Deng Fang (Yosh Yu) put the J-11 through its paces, they successfully demonstrate the jet’s capabilities, including its ability to recover from a spiraling dive. However, their triumph is short-lived as a flock of birds suddenly strikes the cockpit, rendering both pilots unconscious.

Lei Yu manages to regain consciousness and struggles to regain control of the aircraft, his vision blurred by the blood in his eyes. With the anti-stall parachute deployed, he fights to keep the J-11 aloft, eventually pulling up and proving the new improvements worked. This marks a major milestone for the prototype, clearing the way for mass production and cementing Lei Yu’s place as a key figure in China’s pursuit of stealth fighter technology.

As tensions escalate, American stealth fighters and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) once again breach Chinese airspace with impunity. Lei Yu (actor name) and Deng Fang, now at the helm of their fully operational J-20 stealth fighter jets, spring into action, swiftly eliminating the drones from the skies. The stakes raised, they subsequently engage the F-35s in a tense aerial dogfight. However, mindful of the far-reaching diplomatic implications of downing American aircraft, Lei Yu issues a warning to the pilots, prompting the F-35s to retreat from Chinese airspace with haste.
