Annie Clarke and Chris Harper reside in the picturesque Yorkshire village of Knapely, where they deeply engage in their community, especially at the local Women’s Institute, all while cherishing their friendship. Their lives take a poignant turn when Annie’s husband, John, is diagnosed with terminal leukaemia. In a show of support, Chris frequently visits them at the hospital, creating a strong bond during a difficult time.
During one of these visits, Chris expresses her discomfort with the waiting room’s lumpy couch, sparking an idea after spotting a revealing calendar in the workshop of a local mechanic. What if they created their very own calendar? This audacious plan involves members of the Knapely Women’s Institute posing tastefully nude while participating in traditional activities like baking and knitting.
Initially, Chris’s suggestion is met with hesitance from the group. However, her enthusiasm proves contagious as she persuades nine other women to join her and Annie in this unique project. With their hearts set on the notion of raising funds for a comfortable new sofa, they enlist the help of Lawrence, an amateur photographer and hospital staff member. United by a common goal, these women confront their shyness and insecurities, supporting one another through the process.
Despite their determination, they face resistance from the local Women’s Institute’s leader, who flatly refuses to approve the calendar. Undeterred, Chris and Annie passionately appeal to the national Women’s Institute congress in London, only to find that the ultimate decision still lies with their local leader. With some reluctance, she finally consents to let them go ahead with the calendar’s sale.
As fate would have it, the first print run of 500 calendars sells out rapidly, capturing the attention of both national and international media. The women receive an extravagant invitation to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in Los Angeles, which becomes a defining moment in their journey. While Chris contemplates staying home to support her troubled teenager, an unflattering tabloid exposé about her pushes her to join her friends in L.A., igniting a whirlwind of publicity.
However, the fallout from their newfound fame starts to disrupt their lives. Tension escalates during a photo shoot, leading to a fierce confrontation between Chris and Annie. Accusations fly: Annie lashes out at Chris for neglecting her family due to her desire for fame, while Chris retorts that Annie is enjoying her moment as a selfless icon, relishing the admiration of those she helps.
In time, the two friends reconcile, returning to the familiar rhythm of their lives, now colored by their extraordinary experience.
As the credits roll, it is revealed that their calendar venture was a resounding success, netting over half a million pounds, which they selflessly directed towards constructing a special leukaemia wing in their local hospital, ensuring their legacy of courage and camaraderie would benefit those in need for years to come.
