In 2006, two high school students, Patrick Zweig and Art Donaldson, share an unbreakable bond as both best friends and tennis doubles partners. Their lives take a thrilling turn when they meet Tashi Duncan, a highly celebrated young tennis talent who captivates both of them. Following their victory at the Junior Open, Patrick invites Tashi to their hotel room, leading to an intense moment where the trio shares a kiss, though they don’t go beyond that. As stakes rise, Tashi playfully announces that she will give her phone number to the winner of the match between Patrick and Art the next day. Ultimately, Patrick emerges victorious, securing Tashi’s number.

As their paths diverge, Tashi and Art embark on their college tennis journey at Stanford University, while Patrick opts for a professional career. A long-distance relationship blossoms between Patrick and Tashi, but jealousy brews as Art questions Patrick’s true feelings for Tashi. Tensions escalate when Tashi gives Patrick unsolicited advice, leading to a heated argument. Shortly after, she endures a devastating knee injury during a match. Seeking to comfort her, Patrick is met with Tashi’s demand that he leave, resulting in a rift between Patrick and both Tashi and Art. Art steps in to support Tashi through her recovery, yet her tennis career falters. Years later, a rekindled connection between Tashi and Art evolves as she takes on the role of his coach, and they enter into a romantic relationship. However, fate intervenes when Tashi and Patrick cross paths in Atlanta, resulting in a one-night affair observed by an unsuspecting Art.

Fast forward 13 years, and Tashi and Art are now a luxurious power couple, raising their young daughter. With Tashi guiding him, Art has risen to become a top-ranking professional player chasing his dream of a Career Grand Slam. Despite recent struggles to regain his form following an injury, Tashi enrolls Art in a Challenger event in New Rochelle, New York, hoping that he can rebuild his confidence by easily defeating lower-ranked players. Unexpectedly, Patrick, now an unknown player living out of his car, also enters the same event seeking financial stability through modest tournament winnings. As the competition unfolds, both Art and Patrick advance towards a climactic final match, despite starting as outsiders.

Feeling a connection with Tashi, Patrick discreetly seeks her support as his coach to clinch one final season, yet she declines. The night before the ultimate showdown, Art reveals to Tashi his intention to retire at the season’s end, regardless of the outcome. Tashi, feeling trapped in living vicariously through Art’s career, threatens to leave him if he loses to Patrick. In a twist, Tashi covertly meets with Patrick to solicit him to intentionally lose the match to Art, leading to a reluctant agreement, followed by a night of passion between them.

On the day of the high-stakes final, Tashi watches intently as Art and Patrick battle for supremacy. Initially, Art takes the lead, prompting Patrick to inexplicably underperform by serving into the net. However, in an explosive turn of events, Patrick decides to retaliate by taunting Art about their recent encounter with Tashi. Fueled by anger, Art enables Patrick to even the score momentarily. As they trade fierce blows in the last moments of the match, Art ultimately wins, eliciting joy among the spectators, including the cheering Tashi. In a heartwarming conclusion, the long-separated Art and Patrick embrace on the court, showcasing the essence of friendship and rivalry as they unite once more.
