What ancient structure do the laborers discover that leads to the zombie outbreak?

Plot Summary

In the midst of a bustling construction site in East London’s urban sprawl, two laborers stumble upon an ancient catacomb sealed by royal decree during Charles II’s reign. Rather than alerting authorities, they venture forth with reckless abandon, seeking treasure and instead succumbing to the undead curse that awakens amidst the ruins. As the area descends into chaos, a separate thread of fate unfolds.

Terry MacGuire (character) and his younger brother Andy concoct a daring heist to rescue their grandfather Ray’s retirement home from the clutches of demolition. They enlist the aid of their cousin Katy, hapless Davey Tuppence, and Mickey, an Iraq War veteran harboring a metal plate in his forehead, whose mental state is as fragile as his reputation suggests. As they execute their plan at the bank, they inadvertently crash a clandestine embezzlement scheme between the institution’s manager and the head of Hartman Construction. Expecting a modest haul, they instead discover a staggering £2.5 million in cash, thanks to the bank manager’s mistaken assumption that they are Hartman’s representatives. However, as they attempt to flee with their prize, Mickey takes charge, commandeering bank workers Emma and Clive, and precipitates an escape plan. However, upon attempting to leave the premises, they find themselves surrounded by a growing horde of reanimated corpses, courtesy of the very same zombie outbreak ravaging the East End.

Meanwhile, at Ray’s retirement home, the undead begin to wreak havoc among its residents. Amidst the chaos, Ray and his fellow retirees – Peggy, former gangster Daryl, Doreen, and Eric – find solace in the kitchen, where they await rescue from the encroaching hordes. Ray also manages to save Hamish, a resident, and usher him to safety.

As the MacGuire siblings, Katy, Mickey, their hostages, and their plunder drive through the devastated streets of East London, they eventually arrive at their pre-arranged safe house, where their vehicle awaits. Tragedy strikes when Mickey falls victim to a zombie’s bite, prompting the group to tune into the radio for news of the unfolding catastrophe. The true extent of the epidemic soon becomes apparent, leaving them paralyzed with uncertainty and indecision. Emma pleads with her captors to release her and Clive, arguing that their cause is selfish; Katy counters by revealing that they are not committing this heist for personal gain, but rather to salvage Ray’s retirement home from demolition.

As Mickey’s frustration with his cohorts reaches a boiling point, he abandons all pretenses of camaraderie and spirits Emma and Clive away to a secluded room, where he binds them at his mercy. But fate has a cruel sense of humor, as Mickey’s earlier wound from the zombie’s bite ultimately proves to be the instrument of his downfall. As his body begins to succumb to the virus, Terry seizes the opportunity to destroy him once and for all, exploiting Mickey’s vulnerability by forcing a hand-grenade down his throat. In the chaos that ensues, Clive, still reeling from the sudden turn of events, impulsively grabs Mickey’s gun and insists on turning themselves in to the authorities. However, his momentary lapse of reason proves fatal as he is brutally attacked and devoured by a band of lurking zombies, inadvertently sending Davey to an untimely grave in the process.

With their numbers dwindling and morale at an all-time low, the group hastily loads themselves and the loot into Terry’s waiting vehicle, plotting a course for the retirement home. However, their journey is soon interrupted as they stop to search for Emma’s younger sibling, only to discover her in a state of undead torpor. Though initially inclined to put her out of her misery, Emma’s hope for a cure drives her decision to spare her sister’s life, and the group presses on, arming themselves from Mickey’s arsenal of firearms.

Upon arriving at the care home, they launch a daring rescue mission, successfully breaking the zombie siege and liberating Ray and the remaining residents. The group then commandeers a vintage red London double-decker bus, but their victory is short-lived as the vehicle’s mechanical failures strand them in a precarious situation. Recognizing the proximity of the river, they set off to locate a boat, eventually stumbling upon a vessel at a mooring. However, their elation is short-circuited when Peggy discovers the keys are nowhere to be found, and it dawns on them that the boat remains chained to its berth. Ray makes the ultimate sacrifice, offering his life in exchange for the safety of his companions, but miraculously manages to survive and joins the others on the boat as they make their final bid for escape. As they drift down the river, the group ponders their uncertain future, with Ray offering a defiant message: they can reclaim East London from the hordes of undead that now plague its streets.
