What year does the movie 'Days of Heaven' take place?
In the sweltering heat of summer 1916, we meet Bill, a rugged manual laborer hailing from Chicago, whose life takes a tragic turn following a harrowing accident at the steel mill that results in the unfortunate death of his boss. In the wake of this calamity, Bill finds himself desperate and on the run, accompanied by his girlfriend Abby and his young sister Linda. They seek refuge in the expansive landscapes of the Texas Panhandle, hoping to escape the chaos of their previous life.
Upon settling into their new environment, Bill and Abby concoct a sly plan to evade gossip by masquerading as siblings, which proves effective as they become part of a flock of seasonal workers on a sprawling ranch run by a reclusive yet charming farmer. However, their new life brings an unexpected and heart-wrenching revelation: the farmer is suffering from a terminal illness, with precious little time left to live. Despite his grim situation, the farmer’s warmth and kindness draw Bill in, and he begins to fervently devise a scheme that will ensure their financial stability.
In a moment of desperation, Bill suggests that Abby marry the farmer, fully aware that his passing would leave them the heirs to his considerable estate. The wedding unfolds successfully, with Bill adopting the role of Abby’s “brother.” However, the farmer’s unexpected tenacity complicates matters for Bill as he struggles to suppress his actual feelings.
As the situation becomes more precarious, the ranch’s foreman begins to suspect the disguise, while Abby finds herself developing genuine affection for her new husband, further complicating Bill’s already tricky circumstances. The fragile equilibrium is shattered when a disastrous locust swarm, followed by fierce fires, devastates the fields of wheat, leading the farmer to pursue Bill in a furious rage, gun in hand.
Desperately seeking to escape the chaos, Bill is pushed to take drastic, irreversible actions which culminate in the tragic death of the farmer. With their protector gone, Bill, Abby, and Linda must flee but soon find themselves pursued by the authorities. In a heartbreaking turn of events, Bill is mortally wounded as he fights to safeguard his loved ones.
In the aftermath of these calamities, Abby inherits the farmer’s vast estate, choosing to leave behind her troubled past by boarding a train towards the front lines of World War I. Meanwhile, Linda decides to abandon school, joining a friend from the farm on a journey brimming with uncertainty and newfound possibilities.
