Who does James Bond seek vengeance against in 'Diamonds Are Forever'?

Plot Summary

In hot pursuit of Ernst Stavro Blofeld to exact vengeance for his wife’s untimely demise, James Bond, the cunning agent 007 (James Bond), tracks down his arch-nemesis to a clandestine facility where lookalikes are being meticulously crafted through plastic surgery. With precision and stealth, Bond eliminates a test subject, followed by the true Blofeld, in a gruesome display of superheated mud submersion.

Meanwhile, offbeat assassins Mr. Wint (character) and Mr. Kidd (character) wreak havoc as they systematically eliminate individuals in a diamond-smuggling pipeline, leaving M to suspect that South African diamonds are being stockpiled to artificially depress prices through market manipulation. Bond is dispatched to uncover the clandestine operation and dismantle its masterminds.

Undercover as Peter Franks, Bond travels to Amsterdam to rendezvous with Tiffany Case (character), his contact in the smuggling ring. A sudden appearance by the real Franks prompts Bond to intercept and eliminate him, then cleverly switch IDs to create the illusion that Franks is Bond. Tiffany and Bond embark on a perilous journey to Los Angeles, successfully concealing the diamonds within Franks’s lifeless corpse.

Upon arrival at the airport, Bond reunites with his CIA ally Felix Leiter (character), who has disguised himself as a customs inspector. The pair then travels to Las Vegas, where they uncover a web of deceit surrounding a funeral home involved in the smuggling operation. Upon discovering that Franks’s body has been cremated and the diamonds passed on to another smuggler, Shady Tree (character), Bond finds himself betrayed by the funeral home operator.

Wint and Kidd attempt to cremate Bond alive, but Shady Tree intervenes just in time, only to discover that the diamonds were merely plantations, cleverly engineered by Bond and the CIA. With this revelation, Bond instructs Leiter to dispatch the genuine diamonds. The pair then ventures to the reclusive billionaire Willard Whyte’s (character) casino-hotel, the Whyte House, where Shady Tree works as a stand-up comedian. Unbeknownst to Tree, he is soon brutally silenced by Wint and Kidd, who remain oblivious to the diamond ruse.

As Bond navigates the neon-lit corridors of chance at the craps table, he finds himself entwined with the enigmatic Plenty O’Toole. The allure of her presence proves irresistible, leading him to invite her to share a nightcap in his quarters. However, Slumber’s henchmen lurk in the shadows, ambushing them and sending O’Toole plummeting into the pool far below. Bond spends the remaining hours of the night with Tiffany Case (Pazienza), briefing her on the mission to retrieve the coveted diamonds at the Circus Circus casino. But Tiffany reneges on their agreement, fleeing with the diamonds and passing them off to the next smuggler. The revelation that O’Toole met a tragic demise after being mistaken for Tiffany prompts Bond’s partner to reevaluate their alliance. With a change of heart, Tiffany agrees to help Bond, ferrying him to the airport where they witness Saxby, Whyte’s casino manager, exchanging the diamonds with a mysterious scientist at a Shell station.

As they track Saxby and his accomplices, they uncover a trail leading to a remote research facility owned by Whyte. Disguising himself as one of the employees, Bond infiltrates the laboratory, where he discovers a top-secret satellite project led by a laser refraction specialist. After being unmasked as an imposter, Bond makes his escape by commandeering a moon buggy and making a daring break from the facility. Reuniting with Tiffany, they evade capture during a high-speed car chase through the streets of Las Vegas.

Bond’s quest for truth takes him to the opulent Whyte House, where he scales the walls to confront the enigmatic mastermind. Instead, he finds himself face-to-face with two identical Blofelds, whose electronic simulator allows them to mimic Whyte’s voice. Bond dispatches one of the doppelgangers and subsequently falls prey to gas, rendering him unconscious. Wint and Kidd then spirit him away, leaving him for dead in a pipeline deep within the Las Vegas Valley.

However, Bond proves to be an indomitable force, escaping his would-be grave and summoning Blofeld using another voice simulator to pose as Saxby. This ruse allows him to pinpoint Whyte’s desert retreat and, after defeating two formidable female bodyguards, rescue the imprisoned mastermind. Meanwhile, Blofeld seizes Tiffany, setting in motion a desperate bid to reclaim her.

With Whyte’s help, Bond launches a daring raid on the lab, uncovering the sinister plot to harness the diamonds into a laser satellite capable of destroying nuclear weapons installations worldwide. As the satellite soars into orbit, it unleashes a devastating assault on targets in China, the Soviet Union, and the United States. The diabolical Blofeld then proposes an international auction for global nuclear supremacy, casting a dark shadow over the world’s future.

As Whyte’s keen eyes scan the horizon, he spots the oil rig off the coast of Baja California, its imposing structure serving as the perfect façade for Blofeld’s clandestine operation. Undeterred by Tiffany’s (Tiffany) hasty mistake, which had inadvertently foiled Bond’s initial plan to infiltrate the satellite control system, Leiter and the CIA launch a daring helicopter assault on the rig. Meanwhile, Blofeld makes a desperate bid for freedom in a diminutive submarine, only to find himself outmaneuvered by Bond, who commandeers the launch crane and turns the vessel into a wrecking ball, devastating the satellite control center and bringing the entire operation crashing down.

With their mission accomplished, Bond and Tiffany board an ocean liner bound for Britain, where they become embroiled in a new web of intrigue. Unbeknownst to them, Wint (character A) and Kidd have taken up residence as room-service stewards, concealing a deadly bomb inside a seemingly innocuous cake. The pair’s sinister intentions are soon exposed, prompting the killers to launch a brutal attack on their unsuspecting prey. In the ensuing chaos, Bond dispatches Kidd with ruthless efficiency before sending Wint overboard with the explosive dessert, which detonates upon impact, showering the surrounding waters in a fiery spectacle.

As the dust settles, Tiffany’s sharp eyes detect Blofeld’s satellite still lingering in orbit above them, its presence serving as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle against the diabolical villain. With their mission only half-accomplished, Bond and his partner must now devise a plan to recover the stolen diamonds and bring a fitting conclusion to their perilous adventure.
