Plot Summary

The film commences with a lavish high school party at Rosehill, where popular student Drea Torres (Camila Mendes) reigns supreme alongside her tight-knit clique, comprising Tara (Alisha Boe), Meghan (Paris Berelc), Montana (Maia Reficco), and Elliot (Jonathan Daviss). The party’s hostess, Drea, is accompanied by her equally popular boyfriend Max Broussard (Austin Abrams), who showcases a video he wants to submit to Teen Vogue for publicity. However, Drea declines, asserting that this isn’t the image she wishes to project. Later, at home, Drea records an intimate video of herself, which she shares with Max. His response is telling, as he sports a mischievous grin.

The following day, the entire school is fixated on Drea, who’s oblivious to the commotion. Tara reveals that the video has gone viral, and Drea confronts Max about it, only to be met with denials. Her ire boiled, Drea delivers a swift punch to Max’s face. The consequence of her actions is severe: she’s placed on behavioral probation by Headmaster (Sarah Michelle Gellar), who warns that her scholarship will be revoked if she continues to defy authority. Moreover, Drea’s friendship with her group begins to fray as they believe Max didn’t leak the tape.

As summer arrives, Drea finds herself isolated and alone after dumping Max and distancing herself from her former clique. At a tennis camp, she overhears snobbish Erica Norman (Sophie Turner) discussing how the video was spread by an anonymous source – a revelation that only serves to further enrage Drea. It is here that she meets Eleanor Levetan (Maya Hawke), who will be joining Rosehill in the fall and shares her own insight into Erica’s role in disseminating the incriminating footage. Seeking vengeance, Drea plants cocaine in Erica’s belongings, resulting in her banishment from tennis club. As Erica is dragged away, she erupts in a fit of rage and despair.

As Drea’s car refuses to start, Eleanor steps in to offer a ride home, taking the opportunity to share her own tumultuous past with Carissa Jones (Ava Capri), who had once been her confidant but ultimately betrayed her by spreading malicious rumors that labeled Eleanor as a predator. This painful revelation serves as a catalyst for Drea and Eleanor’s budding friendship, which they solidify over a casual dinner date.

As the school year progresses, Drea finds herself ostracized due to her association with Eleanor, while Tara has started dating Max. Meanwhile, Eleanor meets Gabbi (Talia Ryder), who gives her a tour of the school, rekindling memories of Carissa’s treachery. The students then gather for an assembly, where Max announces his plans to start a club catering specifically to cisgender heterosexual men, a move that raises eyebrows and seems like a transparent attempt to deflect attention from the controversy surrounding the leaked tape.

In the bathroom, Drea and Eleanor commiserate over their shared frustration with seeing their tormentors thrive, leading them to concoct a plan to take down their respective bullies. Eleanor is initially hesitant but ultimately jumps on board Drea’s scheme to infiltrate Max’s inner circle while Drea joins Carissa’s farm club.

Eleanor undergoes a makeover to blend in with the “popular” crowd and gather intel on Max, while Drea struggles to connect with Carissa, who has previously belittled the farm as beneath her. Instead, Drea finds herself paired with Russ (Rish Shah) to work on various projects. Meanwhile, Eleanor’s makeover pays off when she receives an invitation to a party at Max’s house, where she discovers that Gabbi is his sister.

As Drea tries to build bridges with Carissa and the farm club members, she seizes an opportunity to swipe the keys to a shed while Carissa isn’t looking. Meanwhile, Eleanor finds herself hiding in Max’s bedroom as he and Tara prepare to hook up, but Tara flees when Max makes a derogatory comment about Drea. Max catches Eleanor but handles the situation with surprising tact, choosing instead to have an open conversation with her outside.

As the Senior Ring Ceremony dinner descends into chaos, Drea and Eleanor’s mischief takes center stage. Under the guise of offering vegan alternatives, they pilfer magic mushrooms from Carissa’s farm stand, unaware that their prank will have far-reaching consequences. The unsuspecting attendees indulge in the potent ‘shrooms, triggering a psychedelic free-for-all that culminates in pandemonium. Meanwhile, Eleanor makes off with Max’s phone, and the Headmaster stumbles upon Carissa’s stash, setting the stage for her swift expulsion.

In the aftermath of the dinner debacle, Drea finds herself entwined with Russ in an art studio, where their artistic inclinations give way to a romantic encounter. As they clean up the evidence of their tryst, little do they know that their friend Max has been leading a secret life, one that will soon be exposed for all to see.

As the girls sift through Max’s phone, they uncover a treasure trove of incriminating messages, revealing his extensive history of infidelity. In a bold move, they broadcast his texts to the entire school, sparking a firestorm of controversy. Tara and her cohorts spring into action, spinning the narrative to portray their relationship as an open polyamorous arrangement, thereby salvaging Max’s reputation.

Drea’s own academic prospects take a hit when she receives word that her application to Yale has been rejected due to flagging grades and a lackluster extracurricular record. Adding insult to injury, someone has anonymously informed the admissions committee about her confrontation with Max. Seething with resentment, Drea becomes obsessed with taking him down, applying pressure on Eleanor to join forces in her quest for revenge.

Meanwhile, Eleanor finds herself swept up in a romantic whirlwind with Gabbi, and they share a tender first kiss. However, their budding love is short-lived, as Eleanor returns home to find that Max and his cohorts have thrown her a surprise birthday party. Though initially thrilled, she’s soon confronted by Drea’s vitriolic outburst, which leaves her reeling.

As the argument escalates, Gabbi overhears Eleanor’s doubts about whether Max leaked the incriminating tape. This revelation sparks a confrontation that ultimately leads to their breakup. With Drea’s scornful words still ringing in her ears, Eleanor is left to ponder the true nature of her friendship and the devastating consequences of their joint scheme.

As Drea delves deeper into the truth behind the sinister forces manipulating her life, a shocking revelation sets her on a collision course with reality. It begins when she uncovers the unsettling fact that someone maliciously tampered with her spark plug, leading her to a rehabilitation center where she crosses paths with Erica, a troubled individual struggling with cocaine addiction. A tense confrontation ensues as Drea passive-aggressively accuses Erica of perpetuating rumors about Eleanor, only to discover the truth - it was Drea herself who started the vicious cycle of gossip. The revelation sparks a chain reaction, exposing the intricate web of deceit woven by Eleanor, who had been manipulating events from the very beginning.

As the truth begins to unravel, Drea’s world is turned upside down when she returns home to find Eleanor waiting for her, reveling in her superior position. The con artist confesses that she deliberately engineered a series of events designed to bring Drea under her control, including sabotaging her car and fabricating a false narrative about their encounter at tennis camp. Eleanor’s diabolical plan involves using Drea as a pawn to expose her old friends at the Admissions Party, hoping to tarnish their reputation and ultimately bring them down.

With Eleanor’s sinister scheme now out in the open, Drea is faced with an impossible choice: comply with Eleanor’s demands or risk everything by refusing. The stakes are raised when Eleanor threatens to frame Drea’s mother for drug possession if she doesn’t cooperate. Feeling trapped and helpless, Drea makes a desperate call to Russ, unwittingly revealing her predicament. This fateful decision sets off a chain reaction that culminates in a car accident.

As Drea recovers at the hospital, Eleanor reveals herself as the culprit behind the crash, further solidifying her ruthless grip on Drea’s life. Meanwhile, Russ implores Drea to come clean about her betrayal of Carissa, serving as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of her actions. Despite this newfound sense of remorse, Eleanor remains resolute in her pursuit of revenge, refusing to abandon her Machiavellian scheme.

In the aftermath of these events, Drea’s old friends extend an olive branch, offering words of comfort and support. As she navigates this treacherous landscape, Drea begins to reconcile with Tara, acknowledging the mistakes they’ve both made throughout the school year.

As the Admissions Party reaches its climax, the tension between Drea and her cohorts boils over, leading to a revelatory confrontation that shatters the façade of their manufactured friendships. The catalyst for this explosive outburst is none other than Eleanor, whose new nosejob has earned her the nickname “Nosey Nora” among her peers. When Eleanor’s transformation becomes the focal point of their conversation, the usually unflappable Drea can no longer contain her disdain, and a heated exchange ensues. The gloves are off as the friends-turned-enemies trade barbs, revealing the depth of their misery and the toll that their vengeful plotting has taken on their relationships. As the dust settles, it becomes clear that their bonds have been strained to the breaking point.

Meanwhile, Max emerges from the shadows, his slow clap a calculated affront designed to belittle Drea’s machinations and undermine Eleanor’s newfound confidence. His scathing remarks cut deep, particularly when he accuses Drea of being just as manipulative and devious as he is. The insult sends Drea reeling, and it becomes apparent that Max has been seeking revenge against her since she rejected his Teen Vogue video submission. As the partygoers begin to turn on him, Max’s world crumbles around him. His friends abandon ship, Tara breaks up with him, and the once-adoring masses turn him into a pariah.

In the aftermath of this devastating blow, Drea seeks out the Headmaster, only to learn that Max has been expelled from school and a coveted spot at Yale has become available. However, instead of capitalizing on her newfound freedom, Drea chooses to remain grounded in reality and forgo the opportunity. Instead, she finds solace in reuniting with Eleanor, and the two former adversaries form an unbreakable bond as they take to the open road.

As the credits roll, a sense of closure is palpable. Drea has reconciled with Russ after confessing her transgressions to Carissa, while Eleanor has rekindled her romance with Gabbi. Max, on the other hand, finds himself at a support group for toxic males, a poignant reminder that his brand of machismo has finally caught up with him.
