As the tumultuous events of World War II came to an end in 1944, Father Lankester Merrin faced a harrowing confrontation with the sinister elements of mankind when he was coerced by Nazi SS Lieutenant Kessel into participating in brutal executions in occupied Holland. This grim experience shattered Merrin’s faith, leading him on an unexpected path that found him years later, in 1947, as an archaeologist exploring the desolate Turkana region in British Kenya. There, he began excavating a Byzantine church built long before Christianity found its way to Africa.
Upon his arrival, Merrin reconnected with Father Francis and Major Granville, the officer supervising the dig. Their journey to Derati was accompanied by Chuma, Merrin’s translator and guide. Welcomed by Rachel, a local doctor, along with Emekwi, a fervent convert, they provided the team shelter as they delved deeper into their work. Notably, as they toured the dig site, both Merrin and Francis were struck by the surprisingly intact condition of the church, seemingly concealed with purpose after its construction.
While exploring, Merrin encountered Cheche, a young outcast with physical challenges. Ignoring Chuma’s cautious words, he took the boy to Rachel for medical care. When an entrance to a secret crypt was unveiled, Merrin, Francis, and Chuma ventured inside, discovering an ancient idol in a sanctuary where human sacrifices were once performed. It dawned upon Merrin that the church had been erected to seal away an underground temple of horrific rituals.
Tensions escalated as local elders demanded Merrin halt his excavations, prompting Francis to inform Granville, who dispatched troops to protect against potential looters, despite Merrin’s protests. The following day, tragedy struck when two British soldiers were gruesomely killed; one decapitated and the other crucified on the altar with his head downward. When locals claimed the soldiers were afflicted by madness, Granville irrationally turned against the Turkana people, losing his grip on morality as he callously shot a young woman during a protest.
In retaliation against what he perceived as ‘Christian evil,’ Jomo, a local elder, broke into the mission school and tragically massacred students, including Emekwi’s child, before being slain by British soldiers. As the conflict escalated, Merrin found himself at a crossroads of morality, grappling with the profound test of his faith amidst the rampant evil around him.
As Francis began to see the negative turn of events, he faced a grim realization: Cheche’s miraculous recovery wasn’t divine, but rather an omen of dark forces. This inner turmoil strained Francis as he felt torn between his duty to help Cheche and the ominous fate looming over the boy. Concurrently, Granville, burdened by guilt, took a tragic step, ending his life to escape the torment that plagued him.
The elders of the Turkana demanded justice for the chaos unleashed in their realm, asking for Francis and Cheche to be turned over to them. Rather than yielding to such demands, the church stood firm. In a moment of urgency, driven by desperation, Francis sought to baptize Cheche, only for their sacred ritual to be interrupted by the sinister forces that were at play within the boy.
With chaos unfurling around them and the church’s entrance blocked off, Francis’s life hung precariously as Merrin found him bound to a tree, suffering from grievous wounds inflicted by arrows. In his dying moments, Francis urged Merrin to exorcise Cheche from the clutches of darkness.
In a dramatic twist, Merrin discovered Rachel in a trance within the underground temple, her demeanor marked by a chilling intensity. Cheche, too, was gripped by the malevolent influence of a demon. As Merrin prepared to confront this darkness, he donned Francis’s vestments, steeling himself for the horrors that awaited him.
The demon, recognizing Merrin’s resolve, offered him a chance to rewrite his tragic past, but Merrin stood firm, unwilling to yield to temptation. Engulfed by a hallucinatory vision, he found himself transported back to Holland in 1944, confronting the ghosts of his past.
Emerging from this torment, Merrin faced the demon’s cruel jests as it taunted him about his futile efforts to change history. An eerie glow enveloped the sky as Rachel, now possessed, acted out violently under the demon’s control. Amid this turmoil, the Turkana people were overtaken by a turbulent fervor.
In this climactic chaos, Merrin summoned every ounce of strength to complete the exorcism and liberate Cheche from the demon’s grasp. As the ritual reached its peak, the spirit of evil was finally expelled, and the darkness enveloping Cheche began to fade.
With the demon vanquished at last, life in Derati began to stabilize, though the scars of the experience lingered among the people. The British detachment prepared to leave, departing from a community forever altered. As Merrin bid farewell to both Rachel and Cheche, he set out on a journey to Rome, his faith reignited and spirit restored.
