Ryan, an eager intern, finds himself amidst a unique group of streamers, including the adventurous Chloe Young, the reckless Kris Russo, the fun-loving Matty, the brave Izzy, and the sensible Kevin, all on a peculiar mission to delve into the darker side of paranormal legends. On his very first day, Ryan suggests that they venture into a local building shrouded in mystery, where rumors swirl about a young girl named Becki Keaton who mysteriously went missing after daring to play the infamous “elevator game.” Unbeknownst to the team, Becki is actually Ryan’s sister, and he has joined the group in search of answers regarding her disappearance, hoping to unearth the truth.
The elevator game is perilous – participants must navigate through specific floors in a predetermined sequence and, once they reach the fifth floor, keep their eyes tightly shut until the doors close. If performed correctly, they stand a chance of entering the spirit realm. However, failure means facing dreadful consequences, particularly from the malevolent entity known as the Fifth Floor Woman, who is responsible for Becki’s tragic fate.
The team records their chilling adventure, capturing various moments throughout their attempt. But their endeavor is marred by disruptions, and they suffer significant technical issues, losing half of their footage due to bizarre recording anomalies linked to the dangerous ritual. Frustrated by the setbacks, Kris proposes that they abandon the whole idea. It is at this moment that Ryan, overwhelmed with emotion, reveals his true identity as Becki’s brother and confronts Kris. He accuses Kris of refusing to continue partly because it would expose his illicit relationship with the underage Becki. This shocking revelation creates a rift within the group, leading them to part ways. Tragically, the chaos spirals as the Fifth Floor Woman strikes, claiming Kris as her next victim.
In a turn of events, Izzy and Kevin, fueled by desperation, decide to attempt the elevator game once more, only to meet their grim fate at the hands of the spectral entity. Ryan, undeterred by the dangers, performs the ritual himself, plunging into the spirit world only to be pursued by the ominous woman.
Back in their office, Ryan and Chloe come across the terrified Matty, who has also encountered the terrifying spirit. Chloe uncovers the dark history behind the Fifth Floor Woman – a vengeful specter emanating from a tragic incident involving a sorority pledge named Allie. Allie had met a dreadful end due to a hazing prank that left her trapped in an elevator shaft, ultimately leading to her crushing demise. To banish her restless spirit, repeating the ritual is their only hope.
However, the thickness of the air is laden with despair as the Fifth Floor Woman takes Matty’s life. Undaunted, Chloe and Ryan push forward to repeat the ritual one last time. Unfortunately, failure looms heavy, and tragedy strikes as Chloe falls victim to the cursed spirit, leaving Ryan ensnared forever in the realm of the undead. The film culminates in an unsettling twist, as an oblivious social media influencer enters the very same elevator in search of content about the missing team, oblivious to the darkness that surrounds its existence.
