ENTRANCE delves into the unsettling shadows that linger at the fringes of our lives, illustrating how swiftly they can morph into the stark terrors of existence. This film intricately examines the corrosive effects of paranoia and the constraints of our perceptions. Directed with a formalist restraint by Dallas Hallam and Patrick Horvath, it presents an intimate character analysis bolstered by the commanding performance of Suziey Block. Her fearless portrayal imbues the narrative with both fear and elegance as ENTRANCE spirals from a mere flicker of dread to a blazing inferno.
According to the 2011 Los Angeles Film Festival website, when Suziey suffers the inexplicable loss of her cherished dog, a pervasive anxiety begins to envelop her, prompting her to contemplate escaping the confines of Los Angeles. However, during the night of her farewell party, she discovers that departing may be far more challenging than she anticipated.
What sets this film apart is its masterful fusion of genres; it becomes an evocative character study intertwined with elements of horror. The real-life Suziey, portrayed convincingly as a barista from Silverlake, reflects both her real identity and her talents as an actress. Interestingly, the rambling hillside residence featured in the film was actually the rental home of director Dallas Hallam during the production. Undoubtedly, the most striking aspect of Hallam and Horvath’s directorial debut is the pervasive sense of dread it instills. Beware— you might find it hard to sleep after experiencing the chills of ENTRANCE.
