The family man Wade Porter (Stephen Dorff) had crafted what seemed to be the perfect life with his girlfriend Laura (Marisol Nichols) and their son Michael. They enjoyed the comforts of a lovely home, Wade was in the process of expanding his business with a new loan, and a wedding was on the horizon. However, their idyllic existence takes a tragic turn when Wade accidentally kills a burglar during a late-night confrontation on his front lawn. In a panic, he chases the intruder out of his home and, in a moment of desperation, strikes him with a baseball bat, leading to the burglar’s unintended death. This act of defending his family results in Wade being arrested and charged with murder.

As he faces trial, Wade is coaxed by his public defender into accepting a plea deal, ultimately pleading no contest to involuntary manslaughter, which grants him a reduced sentence of three years. The road ahead, however, proves treacherous. En route to prison, an alarming event occurs on the transport bus. Danny Sampson (Chris Browning), leader of the local Aryan Brotherhood, commits a violent attack, hiding the weapon with the aid of young gang member Snowman ([Johnny Lewis]). In a moment of fear, Snowman places the knife under Wade’s seat, compelling him to falsely claim ignorance of the weapon.

Due to this incident, Wade finds himself plunged into solitary confinement while the stabbing is investigated. Lieutenant Jackson ([Harold Perrineau]), the commanding officer at Corcoran State Prison, opts to disregard Wade’s clean record and sends him to the notoriously dangerous Security Housing Unit (SHU) despite warnings against it. Within this harsh environment, John Smith ([Val Kilmer]), who is serving a life sentence for avenging his family’s death, arrives as Wade’s cellmate. Seeking to protect Wade from the unrelenting brutality of prison life, John becomes a mentor and ally as tensions in the facility heighten.

In this grim reality of daily lockdowns and limited freedom, Wade learns that his allocated hour of yard time is dominated by brutal fights, with the guards placing bets on the outcomes. Wade’s friendship with John incites the ire of violent factions, especially when the Nazi skinhead gang seeks revenge after Wade refuses to fight on their behalf.

As Wade grapples with the trauma of prison life, his relationship with Laura suffers. Their son Michael experiences nightmares post-visits, and financial strain weighs heavily on the family. Lieutenant Jackson, notorious for his reign of terror, employs violent measures to quell gang clashes, battling both inmates and his own team who wish to maintain order. Jackson even orchestrates sinister fights, compelling Wade into a corner. Refusing to fight, Wade faces increasing threats and deceit, culminating in a false testimony from Jackson that adds three more years to his already lengthy sentence.

Upon receiving this unjust ruling, broken and angry, Wade feels he has no choice but to engage in the brutal combat after enduring maltreatment in exchange for protection. Just when things seem dire, Laura returns, wishing to mend their fractured relationship. Wade resolves to unmask Jackson’s corruption and redeem his life. He coordinates with Laura to inform the DA about the illicit cockfights being staged in the prison.

Finally, tension reaches a boiling point during one of these fights when Wade refuses to kill his opponent. Jackson, seeing his plans unravel, lashes out violently, but the inmates rally behind Wade, forcing Jackson to withdraw. In a twist of fate, as chaos erupts, John intervenes, ultimately leading to a deadly confrontation with Jackson. The timely arrival of the DA and the confiscation of incriminating footage culminate in Wade’s exoneration.

After enduring a harrowing fifteen months, Wade reemerges, reuniting with his family and reclaiming his life, but not without the scars of his grim experience shaping the man who walked out of those prison gates.
