As Edward and Alphonse Elric relentlessly trail the escaped convict Melvin Voyager, they find that their quarry slips through their grasp like sand. Their pursuit intensifies upon discovering that Melvin has only six months left on his five-year sentence, igniting a burning determination within the brothers. During the chaos of Melvin’s hasty escape, they uncover a torn newspaper, the missing piece revealing a photograph of Julia Crichton, who was arrested for illegally breaching the remote border town of Table City, located between Amestris and Creta.
Intrigued by the connection between Melvin and Julia, the Elrics feel a surge of urgency, prompting them to investigate the enigmatic events unfolding in Table City. Their journey, however, is interrupted when a wolf-chimera takes control of the locomotive, leading to an exhilarating battle for dominance. Meanwhile, the Black Bats, an elite flying task force, mistakenly perceive the Elrics’ actions as a rescue mission. They arrive on the scene only to retreat once they recognize that the “prisoners” are actually Amestrian operatives trapping them.
Melvin’s train escape proves short-lived, as the Elrics continue their dogged pursuit. Their quest leads them to a prison where Melvin has razed the walls in his desperate search for Julia. Complicating matters further is the arrival of Miranda, the leader of the Black Bats, who also seeks to liberate Julia from Melvin’s clutches. The stakes heighten as Melvin and Julia find themselves plunging into The Valley, a destitute village situated within a vast chasm surrounding Table City.
As Ed scours the chaos for Alphonse, he stumbles upon the somber history of Table City, formerly known as the Hill of Milos. In the past, Creta invaded and subsequently occupied the city, forcing the original inhabitants to escape to The Valley, where they now live in anguish and destitution. An unexpected bond forms between Julia and Alphonse within the secretive headquarters of the Black Bats, where Julia learns about the heartbreaking legacy of Ed and Al’s past misdeeds. Their ill-fated attempt at human transmutation has left a lingering imprint of sorrow, serving as a stark reminder of the grim repercussions of tampering with forces beyond one’s understanding. Unfortunately for Ed, his brief reunion with Al at the Black Bats’ base is cut short as they find themselves pursued by wolf chimeras dispatched by Colonel Herschel, the formidable commander of the Cretan secret police. In their frantic need to elude capture, they retreat deeper into the shadows.
Their perilous journey leads them to a room brimming with maps and coordinates illustrating Table City’s layout. Here, Miranda unveils their mission: to reclaim Milos by channeling the power of the Sanguine Star, a source of intense heat known as Magma. Julia, captivated by this revelation, realizes that the Sanguine Star may just be a Philosopher’s Stone—an alchemical creation that necessitates human sacrifice for its true abilities to surface. Although left stunned by this discovery, Julia remains resolute in her quest to free the Milosians, garnering the support of Ashleigh.
Determined to prevent a bloody clash, Ed and Al resolve to return to Table City to locate and destroy the Sanguine Star before it can be exploited for malevolent purposes. However, their efforts are soon overshadowed by the Black Bats’ nighttime assault on the city. Amidst the chaos of battle, Miranda, Ashleigh, and Julia push toward the main tower, where startling truths emerge: Ashleigh’s revelation as Security Chief Atlas, a man obsessed with the boundless might of alchemy. His deception is laid bare as he reveals that he has taken on the identity of the real Ashleigh, using skin from his lower left side to maintain his facade.
Just as Ed and Al arrive to rescue Julia from Atlas, he manages to flee to seize the Sanguine Star. As Ed, Al, and Julia pursue Atlas, Colonel Herschel detonates a thermal power plant in the Valley, unleashing a flood of lava that threatens to engulf the area. In a race against time, Al leaps to aid in a desperate effort to save the Valley while Ed and Julia continue their chase after Atlas. In a heart-stopping confrontation, Atlas nearly claims the Star until confronted by Ed and Julia. Julia makes the ultimate sacrifice by swallowing the Star, harnessing its energy to protect the Valley from annihilation.
As the blazing onslaught of molten lava threatens to consume the Valley, Julia lends her support to Alphonse in a desperate endeavor to quell the flames. The sudden appearance of Atlas sets off a fierce confrontation with Colonel Herschel, who reveals his true identity as Ashleigh Crichton—believed to be dead. Surviving by ingesting a Star and utilizing its healing powers, Ashleigh seeks bloody revenge against Atlas for his parents’ demise. Upon revealing his true nature to Julia, Ashleigh offers her the chance to join him in Creta, promising a future where none have dared tread. Julia, however, declines his proposition and instead chooses to face her brother in a gripping battle, with Ed and Mustang standing alongside her in support.
As their confrontation reaches its peak, Julia lands a crippling blow, severing Ashleigh’s arm and effectively concluding the fierce conflict. Following this, she collaborates with Ed and Al to block the magma’s flow, ensuring the Valley’s safety from further catastrophe. Once the power of her Star is depleted, Julia draws on her remaining strength to mend Al’s wounds, restoring his appearance and preserving his life. Tragically, this act of selflessness extracts a heavy toll: both Ashleigh’s and Julia’s Stars dissipate, returning them to mortality. Julia’s sacrifice becomes evident as she loses her left leg and glimpses the mysterious Gate of Truth.
On the other side of the border, the Cretan forces are thrown into disarray as Milosian resistance fighters seize control of their primary stronghold, declaring their independence from Creta. Without Colonel Herschel leading them, the Cretans retreat in total confusion.
As dawn breaks, Ashleigh awakens in a hospital room with Julia, astonished to see his repaired visage. When Julia regains consciousness, she learns that her brother has left behind a prosthetic leg to replace her lost limb. She encounters Ed and Al as they prepare to leave Table City, with Ed admonishing Julia for her misguided choice to harness the Star’s power. Yet Al offers her assurances, promising to visit Julia once he and his brother reclaim their physical forms.
Holding her ground, Julia remains in Table City, committed to leading the Milosians and safeguarding their newly won independence. Meanwhile, Ashleigh resumes his Cretan uniform, rejoining his people, while Ed and Al board a train bound for Central, casting one final glance back at Table City before vanishing into the distance.
