In the heart of Ellington, Illinois, Don Koch, a reformed criminal and Chicago local, strives to make amends for his past as he undertakes the renovation of an old house. He hopes to provide a secure future for his pregnant wife, Liz Koch, and their devoted dog, Cooper. Upon moving in, Don encounters Ellie Mueller, the pastor from across the street, who unexpectedly becomes a source of guidance in his journey.

As Don digs deeper into the home’s hidden enigmas, he is shocked to discover its dark and twisted history, which seems to have an unusual influence on unassuming men. The house, with its bewildering layout, presents bizarre and terrifying revelations, featuring an odd sticky substance seeping through the walls and the sudden proliferation of marbles throughout the rooms.

The situation escalates when Sarah Yates, a mysterious neighbor, ensnares Don with her allure in an upstairs bedroom. However, their clandestine affair is short-lived as a ceiling collapse unveils a secret viewing platform in the attic. Shortly thereafter, Sarah attempts to rekindle their connection, but Don, burdened by guilt, dismisses her.

Don’s former colleague, Milo Stone, arrives to assist him with the repairs. During their encounter, Milo uncovers Don’s betrayal, leading to a heated confrontation. Don warns Milo to keep his findings to himself, but as Milo grows increasingly intrigued by Sarah, he embarks on a path that spirals toward chaos. In a quest for understanding in the basement, he encounters a horrifying fate at Sarah’s hands. Unbeknownst to Don, he assumes Milo has simply stepped away when he finds his absence.

Meanwhile, Liz starts to feel the weight of unease as she senses a growing danger. A fleeting glimpse of Sarah while talking to Don leads him to enhance their home security with new locks and cameras. However, tragedy strikes when Sarah cleverly entices Cooper downstairs with a marble, only for Don to discover his pet lifeless the next morning.

The police, proving unhelpful, leave Don feeling incredulous and furious. In a rage, he confronts Sarah, and in a tragic turn of events, kills her, desperately attempting to hide her body within the basement walls. Yet, just as he hopes to rid himself of the problem, Sarah mysteriously vanishes.

In his frantic search for answers, Don uncovers a secret room in the attic, filled with disturbing drawings of a girl alongside a bird-man figure. His investigation deepens as he finds Milo’s severed head, bringing him closer to unsettling truths about the home’s past. The line between reality and nightmare blurs when he confronts a twisted woman who assaults him with marbles that burrow beneath his skin. In a moment of desperation, Don tries to sever his own neck to rid himself of the marbles, only for more to be cast at him, as the evil energy of the house closes in.

The seeping dread reaches Liz, who stumbles upon a 1909 newspaper article detailing the house’s troubling history. Sarah reemerges, claiming to assist in the renovations, only intensifying Liz’s bad premonitions. The foreboding words of Ellie echo in her mind: > “This house is bad for relationships.” As Liz delves further into the mystery, she is taken back in time, witnessing a disturbing reenactment of the house’s sordid past - men parading upstairs to indulge in an unnerving S&M spectacle orchestrated by Sarah and a masked figure.

In a chilling revelation, Liz finds herself intertwined with this haunting past, facing the brutal reality of Sadie, a young girl whose tragic fate was sealed by a brothel owner. As secrets unravel, Liz confronts Don’s tormented figure, pleading for her understanding amidst a whirlwind of horror. Sarah’s true malicious intent surfaces as she wears Don’s skin, mocking the struggle against the tyrannical cycle of oppression. Despite her fear, Liz harnesses the strength to resist.

Upon confronting the harrowing trials, Liz protects herself from the vile influences, ultimately overcoming the dark power overtaking the house. With Ellie’s guidance, she learns the significance of acknowledging one’s past mistakes. Committed to expelling the house’s negative energy, Liz resolves to remain and make peace with its spirits. In a final act, she lays Sarah to rest, bringing closure to the agonizing history that resided in the walls.

Fast forward six months, and Liz finds a newfound sense of tranquility as she embraces motherhood. The old mansion transforms into a haven rather than a haunted relic. However, a sense of foreboding looms when she finds her baby alone in the crib, only to see Don’s specter hovering above, dropping marbles within the child’s sanctuary— a haunting reminder that some legacies may never truly fade away.
