Gunner delivers a markedly weak cinematic experience, with core deficiencies across virtually every facet of filmmaking. Critics and audiences alike cite stilted direction, uninspired visuals, and substandard production values that undermine any intended impact. The narrative is riddled with recycled plot devices and sluggish pacing, while performances remain largely wooden and devoid of emotional resonance. Consequently, the film fails to engage, offering little justification for repeat viewings or recommendation.
The Movie Echo Score Breakdown for Gunner
Art & Craft
In terms of art and craft, the film falters at multiple levels. Direction is described as poorly executed, and the digital effects appear cheap and unrealistic, especially in skydiving and combat sequences. While one reviewer noted the cinematography was not entirely lacking, the overall visual presentation suffers from choppy editing and incoherent style, leaving a largely unsatisfying aesthetic impression.
Character & Emotion
When evaluating character and emotion, performances are consistently criticized as wooden and mediocre. Both lead and supporting actors, including a high‑profile cameo, fail to deliver depth or believable chemistry. Reviewers highlight weak character development and contrived relationships, resulting in minimal emotional engagement. The acting shortcomings dominate the perception of this aspect, contributing to an overall sense of underwhelming character work.
Story & Flow
The story and flow of the film are viewed as largely ineffective. Critics point to a recycled, lifeless plot, forced narrative devices, and sluggish pacing that erode momentum. Dialogue is described as cringeworthy, and the overall coherence suffers from incoherent editing. Although occasional action moments provide brief spikes of excitement, they are insufficient to compensate for the fundamentally weak storytelling structure.
Sensory Experience
Sensory experience receives harsh criticism, with soundtrack and sound design deemed off‑key and derivative. Visual style is marred by subpar CGI, green‑screen effects, and inconsistent lighting that detract from immersion. While one comment mentions the cinematography as not entirely poor, the prevailing sentiment emphasizes a lack of cohesive auditory and visual polish, resulting in a generally unsatisfying sensory impression.
Rewatch Factor
Rewatch factor is minimal, as audiences uniformly report little desire to view the film again. Reviewers describe the experience as tedious, with many stopping viewing prematurely and refusing future engagement. Even the most generous rating acknowledges limited entertainment value, and the consensus suggests the film lacks lasting appeal, making repeat viewings unlikely.

Medal of Honor recipient, Lt. Colonel Lee Gunner Luke Hemsworth returns to his hometown after a long career in the U.S. Army Special Forces. Lee hopes to reconnect with his sons Travis Connor DeWolfe and Luke Grant Feely, and gets permission from his ex-wife Claire Yulia Klass to take them camping. Travis is resentful toward his father for disappearing during his last tour and for the death of his older brother, who died in Afghanistan. Lee’s brother Jon Barry Jay Minoff meets them at base camp as they take ATVs deep into the woods.
While hiking, the group discovers a hidden Triad drug lab and are discovered after Jon trips an IED, mortally wounding him. Lee fights off the Triads to buy time for his sons to escape. Travis and Luke are kidnapped by the Triads’ business partners, a ruthless biker gang led by Dobbs Ryker Mykel Shannon Jenkins. Lee tries to rescue them but is interrupted by a DEA raid and is arrested.
Lee breaks out of jail with help from Sheriff Bob Lilly John D. Hickman and tracks Dobbs to an abandoned lumber mill where he fights his way to his sons. Lee is able to free Travis but Dobbs escapes with Luke as the DEA arrives. Lee and Travis meet Kaylor, Sean Rogers, an Army Ranger whom Lee served with in Afghanistan. Kaylor tells Travis that Lee saved him from an ambush on his last tour but was captured by the Taliban and tortured for a year until he could escape.
Lee decides to break Dobbs’s father Kendrick Ryker Morgan Freeman out of prison to trade him for Luke. Lee parachutes into the prison disguised as a guard and starts a riot as cover to escape with Kendrick. Lee duct tapes a shotgun to Kendrick and arrives at Dobbs’s drug warehouse. As Dobbs agrees to swap his father for Luke, Kendrick stabs Lee and runs away but trips causing the shotgun to fire and kill him.
Dobbs takes Luke and escapes on a helicopter as Lee fights bikers to reach them. Lee manages to reach the helicopter but the pilot is killed as Lee and Dobbs fight. As the helicopter falls, Lee kills Dobbs by kicking him out of the helicopter and parachutes to safety with Luke. With his family safe and cleared by the DEA, Lee visits the grave of his eldest son.
