In the charming town of Sandusky, Ohio, 25-year-old Gypsy Vale (Sara Rue) and her goth companion, 18-year-old Clive Webb (Kett Turton), share a profound connection fueled by their passion for the darker aspects of life. As Gypsy dreams of becoming a renowned singer like her idol Stevie Nicks, she grapples with the conflict of pursuing her ambitions while remaining loyal to her father, Ray (John Doe), in the wake of her mother Velvet’s (Marlene Wallace) mysterious disappearance.
Their journey takes an exciting turn when Clive stumbles upon the Night of a Thousand Stevies event in New York, prompting them to embark on an adventurous road trip. Along the way, they encounter a vibrant array of characters that enrich their narrative. Their journey begins when they pick up Zechariah, a hitchhiker who claims to be escaping the limitations of Amish life. At a rest stop, Clive’s feelings for Zechariah are met with rejection, leaving him embarrassed and prompting him to run away. Meanwhile, Gypsy finds herself unexpectedly drawn to Zechariah, who, contrary to her expectations, expresses his romantic interest in her.
However, their brief encounter blossoms into a night of passion that swiftly spirals into turmoil when Zechariah announces his decision to return home, leaving Gypsy feeling heartbroken and deceived. Simultaneously, Clive finds himself in a questionable situation with Troy, a restless spirit lingering at the rest stop with his fraternity brothers, leading to a secretive and fleeting romance.
As the dawn arrives, Gypsy and Clive grapple with a mix of emotions stemming from the prior night’s escapades. They face derision from Troy’s fraternity brothers, which leads to a missed opportunity for Gypsy to audition for the Night of a Thousand Stevies. As if struck by fate, they learn of the tragic truth surrounding Gypsy’s mother; she had taken her own life four years ago.
In a moving turn of events, a compassionate Mistress of Ceremonies, who was a close friend of Gypsy’s mother, offers her the chance to perform a heartfelt song dedicated to her mother at the event’s finale. This powerful moment becomes pivotal in Gypsy’s quest, inspiring her to remain in New York and pursue her musical dreams, just as her mother did before her. Meanwhile, Clive resolves to return to Sandusky to complete his high school education with a promise to reunite with Gypsy in the city after he graduates.
