What tragedy befell Laura and Brendan's family several years prior?

Plot Summary

Laura lives in Northern Ireland with her husband Brendan and their son Tadhg. Tragedy struck when their daughter Josie lost her life in a car accident several years ago, with Brendan behind the wheel. Their life takes an unexpected turn when a new family moves in next door. Megan, a girl who quickly becomes friends with Laura, moves in with her parents, Marie and Chris. Megan mentions having attended the local school and visited the nearby graveyard, intriguing Laura, but [Marie] insists that Megan has never been to either place.

One day, at Megan’s behest, Laura brings her to a local playground. However, after Megan claims to have been there before, Laura’s patience snaps, and she angrily returns her home. Concerned, [Marie] asks Laura to keep her distance from Megan. In an effort to help Laura decompress from the escalating stress, Brendan suggests a family getaway. While browsing through Brendan’s phone, Laura discovers multiple photos of Megan, raising her suspicions even further.

Upon returning home, Laura takes Megan for a drive along Ballyfield Road—the very road where the accident that took Josie’s life occurred. During the drive, Megan shares a haunting detail: she claims Brendan was singing while driving, which convinces Laura that Megan might somehow be the reincarnation of Josie. Tensions boil over that night when Tadhg lashes out at Megan, leading to police involvement. Seeking space, Laura asks Brendan to stay elsewhere for a few days.

The story thickens as Laura uncovers a photograph of Brendan with Marie at a party—completely undermining his claim of not knowing her. Dramatically, Brendan encounters Megan, who has begun to understand that Brendan is her biological father. In a desperate quest for answers, Laura breaks into Megan’s home, discovering several photographs of Josie and a CD from 2007 featuring recordings of Josie and Tadhg. This confrontation escalates violently, culminating in a life-threatening incident where Marie stabs Laura with glass.

In an emotional climax, Megan arrives just in time to express her sorrow to Laura; in a moment of delirium, Laura briefly sees Megan as Josie and tells her, > “I love you.” In the end, after a harrowing journey through grief and discovery, the film concludes with a healed Laura placing flowers at Josie’s grave, marking a poignant reminder of loss and resolution.
