As Thien grapples with the tragic loss of his sister-in-law Teresa in a heart-wrenching motorcycle accident in Saigon, there’s a glimmer of hope as his young nephew Dao, only five years old, miraculously survives the ordeal. In a poignant blend of sorrow and responsibility, Thien makes the difficult journey back to his rural hometown, bringing along both Teresa’s lifeless body and Dao, where the rustic charm of the countryside provides a stark contrast to their mourning.

The atmosphere is heavy with grief as the community gathers for Teresa’s funeral, engaging in solemn Catholic rituals to pay their respects. During this time of reflection, Thien encounters a wise elderly veteran who recounts his harrowing experiences from the Vietnam War, shedding light on the profound differences between the survivors of the conflict and those who did not endure its horrors. Through these emotional exchanges, Thien begins to form a bond with Dao, taking him on a memorable hunting trip alongside their host and, with some hesitation, reconnecting with his childhood friend who is now a nun, Thao.

As the days unfold, Thien organizes for Dao to attend the school where Teresa once taught, amid students hailing from the highlands. Yet, instead of remaining in the village to witness the healing process, Thien chooses to set off on a wandering quest to discover the whereabouts of his missing brother. Fueled by an urge to uncover the truth about his brother’s fate and ultimately ensure Dao’s future, this quest reveals surprising insights into their family’s history, including his brother’s past contemplation of a life devoted to the priesthood before opting for marriage.

Thien’s journey leads him to another village where he seeks clues regarding his brother’s fate. He meticulously studies a wedding photograph he discovered on Teresa’s body and shares stories with the locals, hoping to connect the dots. However, despite his relentless pursuit, disappointment and silence surround him, forcing Thien to confront not only the harsh realities of his fruitless search but also the lingering uncertainties and mysteries that envelop his brother’s disappearance. With every step he takes, he must reconcile his own grief while seeking resolution for the family he has left behind.
