Leslie Wright, portrayed by Queen Latifah, is a forthright physical therapist who finds herself weary of the typical “guy’s girl” lifestyle. Alongside her God-sister, Morgan, they share a home where Morgan dreams of becoming an NBA trophy wife. Their lives take an unexpected turn after a Nets basketball game, when Leslie aids star player Scott McKnight, played by Common, at a gas station. Grateful for her help, Scott invites Leslie to his birthday celebration, where she attends with Morgan. It’s then that Scott’s interest shifts from Leslie to Morgan, leading to a whirlwind romance that culminates in their engagement.
However, things take a serious turn during the 2009 NBA All-Star Game, filmed at the Izod Center. Scott suffers an injury that poses a significant threat to his career. Morgan, unimpressed with Scott’s choice of physical therapist, suggests that he should seek Leslie’s assistance. Consequently, Leslie temporarily moves in with them to aid Scott’s recovery. As rumors swirl about Scott potentially being unable to return before the playoffs, Morgan takes the drastic step of leaving him, leaving only a note behind. This abandonment devastates Scott, who becomes disheartened and struggles with his recovery.
In a twist of fate, it’s Leslie who steps in to uplift Scott’s spirits. They spend many hours together, forging a deep bond as she helps him regain his strength. With her support, Scott makes a triumphant return to the NBA just in time for the playoffs, securing his first victory back on court.
Just as romance is blossoming between Leslie and Scott, Leslie’s world is upended when Morgan reappears at Scott’s door, seeking to mend their relationship. In a selfless act, Leslie decides to move out, allowing Scott and Morgan a chance to reunite. Thanks to her invaluable help during his recovery, Leslie finds herself pursued by numerous teams for athletic training positions, most notably the Philadelphia Sixers. However, Scott realizes that his heart belongs to Leslie and makes a heartfelt gesture to stop her.
Fast forward a year, and we see Leslie thriving as one of the athletic trainers for the Nets, with her and Scott happily married, showing that their journey was just the beginning of a beautiful partnership.
